Unesa.ac.id, Surabaya-The suicide bombing in Makassar and followed by the 'attack' of The National Police Headquarters some time ago became a sign that radicalism still exists and grows in the community. The tragedy became homework for all parties including the college.
State University of Surabaya (UNESA) took a role to answer the issue. One of them is through a public discussion with experts to 'dissect' the teachings of Radicalism, the pattern of dissemination and strategies to counteract it in higher education. The event was held on the 11th Floor of Rectorate Unesa Lidah Wetan on Wednesday (7/4/2021) and broadcast live on Kece TV's YouTube channel.
As a resource person, dr. H. Jazilul Fawaid, S.Q., M.A., Vice Chairman of mpr RI was present. Then there's Brig. Gen. Pol. Ahmad Nur Wahid, S.E., M.M., Director of Prevention bnpt and Prof. Dr. Hariyono, M.Pd., as Vice Chairman of BPIP. The discussion was guided by Dr. Bambang Sigit Widodo, M.Pd., Unesa Academician as moderator.
Prof. Dr. Nurhasan., M.Kes., Rector of Unesa stated that the problem of radicalism is a serious and very complex problem. Therefore, it should be a common concern to present the right solutions and reliable strategies to counteract them.
Cak Hasan (his friendly greeting) explained that radical understanding is certainly related to many factors. Gap factors, education, and also other factors. According to him, it is also related to the population of Indonesia currently reaches 270.6 million people. Then the number of mobile phone devices in Indonesia exceeds the number of people which is about 338.2 units. And the level of education in Indonesia is not yet fully evenly distributed.
That is, one side of the data becomes a good potential for the Indonesian nation, but it will also have a bad impact if it is not managed and utilized properly. "What is the story of our people who spread false news and hateful information? This is what we need to discuss," he said.
The Issue of Injustice Can Be Trigger
In addition, Cak Hasan also presented 2020 data from several survey institutions stating that the highest value in the view of Young Indonesians is dominated by injustice and followed by mutual value.
Young people judge that Indonesia is far from justice and prosperity. This means that when the issue of injustice is rolled out, young people will quickly become volatile. "Young people based on some surveys also tend to think short. If the issue of injustice and religion is raised, then this can be dangerous," he said.
Ppim UIN Jakarta data in 2018, as many as 58.5 percent of students are radical-minded and 45.0 are radically intolerant. Idn Research Institute surveyed 1,400 millennials that 19.5 percent of young people have the view that the caliphate state is the ideal country for Indonesia.
Wahid Foundation also surveyed top students ranked 1-10, resulting in 60 percent of students ready for war if there is a call to defend oppressed Muslims. "The data is a warning so that we don't let our guard down," he said.
Countering Radicalism Needs a Joint Commitment
To counteract intolerance and radicalism on campus, students and Civitas Academica need to be committed in fostering nationalism attitudes and awareness, love of the homeland, tolerance, and the planting of pancasila values in accordance with the current context. "Planting the value of pancasila is certainly not only a matter of doctrine, but also through diaological means," he concluded.
Moderators opened the discussion with a key question, terror incidents still occur in Indonesia and approximately what is in the understanding of the perpetrators until it can be that close? Gus Jazilul Fawaid argues that radical thinking will always exist in every age. Not only this day, but since the time of the prophet has existed.
From Radicalism to Terrorism
He continued, that Radicalism, Extremism, and Terrorism were almost identical. Radical thoughts plus violence are called terrorists. Thinking radicals blame others can be extremists. What causes the mind of Radicalism? One is because of a sense of superiority, feeling smarter, greater, and truer than the other. So it is easy to discredit others and demean others. Outside the other group is called wrong and only the group is right. "This understanding could be terrorism," he said.
Gus Jazilul appreciates that Unesa is the leading campus in answering the problem of Radicalism. According to him, Unesa as a campus that produces superior teachers, certainly has a formula in anticipating the emergence of radicalism movement on campus. "We must have the right method, Unesa is certainly able to formulate that method that can be used by all of us in countering radicalism in the community," he said. "If you can with that method, just 2 hours, the radical mind disappears," he continued.
Meanwhile, Bnpt's Director of Prevention said that Terrorism is an act or action that uses violence or threats of violence that create an atmosphere of terror, widespread fear, inflict fatalities both dead and injured, causing damage to public facilities with ideological, political or security motives.
According to him, Terrorism can not be separated from Radicalism. Terrorists are his actions, while Radicalism is the understanding that is the phase leading to Terrorism. Radicalism tends to animate acts of Terrorism.
Understanding it can be dangerous. The impact could damage the value of religion as well as the value of Pancasila. In addition, it causes division and slander in the community. It can even develop into social conflicts and national conflicts. "We learn from conflicts across the Middle East, preceded by the phenomenon of rampant radicalism and terrorism collaborating with the constructive opposition plus foreign interference and that is very dangerous," he said.
Grounding Pancasila
Vice Chairman of BPIP in his presentation argued that Pancasila has not been completely grounded in daily life. "One side of us as scientists agree Pancasila as the basis of the state, but our scientific epistemology has not really contributed to Pancasila," he said.
What's the impact? Pancasila is still limited to tolerance. Pancasila was created from the beginning to unite all elements of the nation. To unite it takes tolerance. Is it possible that we can achieve the vision of nationality as an independent, united, just and prosperous sovereign and civilized nation only with tolerance? Of course not, because it takes efforts one of them mastery of science and technology.
Pancasila from Tolerance to Innovation and Achievement
Translating Pancasila should not stop at tolerance, but 'jump' on innovation and achievement. Pancasila in addition to unifying the nation, also became a star that led the Indonesian nation to become a great nation, advanced and superior.
Radicalism doesn't always have negative connotations. Even according to him by quoting kuntowijoyo opinion there needs to be radicalization in Pancasila. Ppancasila as an analytical knife to criticize the reality that exists. Pancasila can be a radical media.
He expressed his gratitude and appreciation for Unesa, unesa's pattern is quite interesting and according to him also needs to be developed into the scope of epistmeology.
Pancasila Haru Coloring Public Space
Why was Pancasila unable to counter radicalism? According to him, because of post-reform, Pancasila was lost from public space. When the public cognition space of the Indonesian nation is empty of the value of Pancasila, then enter the offer or influence of other ideologies such as Radicalism, Extremism, and even Terrorism.
According to him, lecturers when teaching Pancasila do not only talk about the history of the past about Pancasila. However, learning history is learning the past to go through the past. "In the context of this discussion, the roots of Pancasila need to be treated through history, but can also produce fruits in the form of useful value for the lives of the Indonesian people," he said. The discussion event which was attended by thousands of participants offline and virtually ended with question and answer sessions from various participants. (Pr. Unesa)
