Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA–Having been delayed due to the pandemic, the State University of Surabaya (UNESA) together with the International Junior Chamber (JCI) East Java and Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP) Surabaya held the 2022 Walk for Autism (WFA) at Lagoon Avenue Mall Surabaya on Sunday (27/3/2022) . This activity is supported by the East Java Provincial Government and the Surabaya City Government.
WFA is a routine agenda to commemorate World Autism Awareness Day, April 2, 2022 with the theme 'Connecting Our Path'. The series of events started last January which consisted of various activities, including webinars, competitions to film making.
The chairman of the East Java PKK TP, Arumi Bachsin was also present and on stage with children with disabilities who appeared at the celebration event. The wife of the Deputy Governor of East Java, Emil Elestianto Dardak, said that children with special needs come with a million potentials.
“Children with disabilities have advantages, they just need a support system to grow their potential. Their appearance is extraordinary, this is proof that children with disabilities are able to work,” he said.
The Head of the Center for Study and Disability Services (PSLD) UNESA, Prof. Dr. Budiyanto, M.Pd. reminding the importance of support from the environment and the closest people for the development of persons with disabilities, including autism. Every child is special and each child is great. "Let's support them, give them space and opportunity to be great in the future," he said.
This activity aims to support persons with disabilities in their work and expression and develop their potential. "Children with disabilities need space for self-actualization. That's what we need to prepare for them. Most importantly, this is part of a joint effort to increase public awareness in viewing children with disabilities," said Richard Subroto, Project Director of WFA 2022.
Khusnur Ismiati Hendro Gunawan as the Head of Dharma Wanita Persatuan Surabaya stated that the event was part of a joint effort to educate the public as well as appreciate autistic children.
