Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA_The East Java contingent is in 10th position in the final medal standings at the XVI Papua 2021 National Paralympic Week (Peparnas) which will take place 5-12 November and close on 13 November 2021. East Java athletes collected a total of 47 medals, in details 12 gold, 22 silver. and 13 bronze. Behind this achievement, there is the role of several lecturers from the Faculty of Sports Science (FIO) UNESA who become coaches in several sports (sports).
The lecturers in question, 1) Dr. Dwi Cahyo Kartiko, M.Kes., Deputy Dean for Academic Affairs FIO UNESA who became the archery coach. 2) Visit Ashadi, S.Pd., M.Fis., coach in swimming, 3) Dr. Abdul Rahman Syam Tuasikal, M.Pd, coach in chess, and 4) Dr. Nanik Indahwati, M.Or is a manager in swimming.
Ashadi's visit, on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, stated that the role of UNESA behind the East Java contingent at Peparnas could not be underestimated. This is a manifestation of at least two things, namely concern for the world of sports as well as for athletes with disabilities in East Java and Indonesia in general.
Donate some medals
This role can be seen from the contribution of UNESA coaches in some of these sports and managed to bring home several medals. “In the sport that I practice alone, swimming has won nine medals, 2 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze. Not to mention the medals in other sports handled by UNESA coaches, not bad," he explained.
He admitted that the medals in swimming did not match the initial target, which was his hope of winning 5 gold medals. Therefore, in the future, his party will use the time basis available in Peparnas to map the limits of athletes who may enter the training camp. "If the time is too far away from reaching the target there, then we will not take it, because there is no potential to get a medal," he said.
Need maximum support
This data will be used as the basis for recruiting athletes. Even if you win at the district and city levels or even at the provincial level, if the result of the boundary count does not have the potential to win at the national level, then it will not be brought to Peparnas. "We will only bring athletes who really have the potential to get medals," he said.
He hopes that, with the condition that the number of contingent athletes is far less than other regional contingents, the provincial government can pay great attention to sports with disabilities and even pay attention to non-disabled sports. Attention in the form of a budget will have a broad impact on the search for prospective athletes and coaching at the district and city levels.
With strong support and policies from the local government, it can spur the development of sports in districts and cities to develop potential in producing excellent athletes for East Java.
UNESA's efforts to win East Java
Meanwhile, Cahyo Kartiko added that initially East Java hoped to collect 21 gold, while the result was only 12 gold. His party from UNESA is trying to realize this target from the screening stage to the puslatda really carried out optimally. Various efforts were taken. In fact, training is still being carried out despite the pandemic and PPKM. "We are implementing a closed puslatda with a mandatory in and out SWAB system. Even psychological assistance has been prepared," he explained.
According to him, the concern for sports with disabilities is UNESA's effort to increase public awareness of the existence of people with disabilities. "This is UNESA's commitment to excel in sports, disability, education, arts, language and culture," he explained. [UNESA PR]
