Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA-Today, the world of work continues to experience changes and developments, including jobs in the media or journalism. For students or fresh graduates, especially German language learners, journalism is an option in finding a job. There are many challenges to being a journalist in this century.
Therefore, the German Literature Study Program, State University of Surabaya discussed it in a talk show entitled "How to Succeed as Journalist in Germany and Freiburg at Glance?" on Saturday, October 30, 2021. This activity is also a form of collaboration with the STBA Yapari ABA Bandung German Study Program and the Kompasiana Traveler Community (Koteka).
This talkshow was attended by Alena Erhlich, a journalist from Germany who works at Badische Zeitung, one of the news media in Germany. On this occasion he shared his interesting experience as a journalist. According to him, being a journalist does not have to be from a journalism department, but also from various study programs such as history, economics, law, and of course German.
As someone who started a career in journalism at the age of 17, Alena said that being a journalist is a job full of ideas. How not, a journalist is required to always be critical and creative in writing a news topic. This is what makes him love this job so much.
He also shared how to become a journalist, namely having journalistic skills, writing, experience, and participating in internship programs, especially in media companies. "Training journalistic skills can be started by writing on a blog or website, then you can take part in an internship program at a media company," he said.
Furthermore, he said that along with technological advances, media companies massively expanded into digital media, even though print media, such as newspapers, magazines, and tabloids were still very popular with German citizens, especially the elderly. He also mentioned the challenges that make the world of journalism stressful, including digitalization and social media.
"Digitalization and social media are both a challenge and an opportunity in the world of journalism. We can easily access various information and write opinions, but on the other hand we will find a lot of fake news or hoaxes spread on the internet," he explained.
In addition, the pandemic period is also a challenge for a journalist, Alena said during the pandemic many things have changed in her life, namely her work life, which initially she worked in an office and then had to work at home. However, this has become the main topic that inspires writing news. (meds)
