Unesa.ac.id. SURABAYA—Surabaya State University (UNESA) is one of the study destinations for overseas students taking the Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) program. This year, the 'Home of Champions' campus accepted 26 international students.
The BIPA program students come from various countries, Turkey, America, Madagascar, Uganda, Vietnam, South Korea, Yemen, China, Japan, India, the Philippines and Australia. They were welcomed by BIPA administrators and friends in the Meeting Room, Central Library, Campus II Lidah Wetan, on Monday, September 2 2024.
Chairman of BIPA UNESA, Octo Dendy Andriyanto said, BIPA program students were accepted from various schemes scholarship, KNB, Darmasiswa, ISS. There are also regular and private scheme students for the 2024/2025 academic year.
The Javanese Language and Literature Education lecturer continued that new BIPA students will attend lecture classes offline starting from Monday-Thursday. Then on Friday there will be a cultural introduction visit at the UNESA Labschool.
"Their lectures are the same as regular students, starting today, Monday, September 2 to December 10 2024. Outside of their lecture hours, on Fridays they teach foreign languages and cultures at Labschool," he said.
While participating in this program, BIPA students will learn writing, listening, reading and speaking, grammar, culture and gamelan (karawitan). These courses are mandatory for BIPA students to take while studying at the 'Home of Champions' campus.
BIPA students will later be guided by BIPA friends. This relates to assistance in providing non-academic services, such as health support and other social activities. With this, it is hoped that new BIPA students will quickly adapt and be comfortable at UNESA.

Deputy Dean for Division II FBS UNESA, Heny Subandiyah wants new students to be able to get to know Indonesian culture and language from all aspects, not just from lecture material. He advised BIPA students and friends to always study diligently, help each other and maintain communication between each other.
“Safety and health are the main keys for BIPA friends and students. I mention safety first because it is important, don't let unwanted things happen. "Communication is the main key," he said.
Meanwhile, Head of Sub-Directorate for International Affairs (KUI) UNESA, Asrori, said that UNESA is one of the universities that houses the most Darmasiswa students apart from other universities.
He advised BIPA students to be wiser in using their visas, so that it does not become a stumbling block for them in the future. Apart from that, he also reminded BIPA students that they can consult regarding health issues can learn Indonesian language and culture fluently and successfully. "Hopefully later you will be able to learn Indonesian well and fluently. For this reason, you need to interact a lot with students and even local residents here," he concluded.[]
