Surabaya State University (Unesa) also highlighted the policy of sending students involved in 'juvenile delinquency' to the military barracks, as did the West Java Provincial Government (Pemprov).
According to the Deputy Chancellor for Education, Student Affairs, and Unesa Alumni, education in military barracks is not a goal, but as a means or 'tool' to grow and strengthen the character of children, for example to be disciplined and responsible.
"This military barrack education is complement, not the main education, because the main one remains at home and school," said the Unesa Vocational Faculty lecturer when giving his comments at one of the television stations on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 ago.
In other words, the application of character education in schools and in the family environment if it has not been able to foster student character, then a supplement or reinforcement is needed, one of them is military -style education or pesantren style.
This policy, he continued, is not new in Indonesia. Because, many schools involve the military in strengthening character education, for example there is a basic training program for student leadership or LDKS and the like.
"Only the problem at that time was that students were not labeled or dicking with the term bad boy. Military education had no problems, not only for bad children, but children who wanted to grow the soul of the Korsa, Discipline, and so on could also," he explained.
Is this violating the national education system? According to him, in the National Education System Law No. 20 of 2003 there is such a thing as special education or alternative education, which is oriented to children who have special problems.
Children with special problems here such as street children, bad children, inclusion children and so on. That is, in the national education system there is space to provide character education supplements to children.
Because this is special education, it is necessary to assess problems and the needs of children, because not all children can match an educational approach.
The task that carries out this assessment is from the school together with the local government team, the Department of Education and the Department of Women's Empowerment, Child Protection, and Family Planning or DP3AKB.
Martadi emphasized that military-style education does not necessarily change the character of children, because it is aspects of its sustainability. For example, what should be done by parents, and school, after the child completes military -style education.
Then, a good program like this also needs to be considered the momentum, for example this program is carried out to fill the children's holidays, and children are not naughty, because it is part of disciplinary education, mental education or character for children. []
