Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA - The State University of Surabaya (UNESA) continues to strengthen cooperation with the district government (Pemkab). One of them is with Magetan, for example, whose collaboration has reached various fields. Most recently, the synergy between the two focuses on increasing the digital literacy of students and teachers of state junior high schools (SMPN) in Magetan Regency.
On that basis, the UNESA team led by the UNESA Deputy Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. Bambang Yulianto, M. Pd., held a number of trainings to improve digital literacy for students and teachers which took place in the Auditorium of SMPN 1 Magetan. Activities are carried out in stages starting on Tuesday, July 5, 2022, until September 19, 2022.
Prof. Bambang stated that digital literacy is a competency needed in this digital era. Digital literacy is the ability to use technology including computers and smartphones (HP) with all devices, features and applications to find, evaluate, utilize, create and communicate data or information with cognitive, technical and behavioral or ethical skills.
“This capability consists of several important variables. But what is clear is that this training is to provide students or teachers with an understanding of the essence of technology itself. Then how to use and utilize it for the needs of learning and teaching in schools," he explained.

In this regard, several important variables were trained, namely the technical writing skills of both students and teachers which included basic journalism skills, photography and school magazine layouts, school magazine management, to the practice of digitizing school magazines. "This training is of course based on the policy direction of the education office in Magetan in relation to the implementation of the independent learning curriculum there," said Prima Vidya Asteria, S.Pd., M.Pd.., one of the lecturers involved as the service team.
Harmanto continued, the training is to equip students and teachers to have the technical skills to revive the literacy culture in schools in Magetan. For example, journalistic materials are intended so that students and teachers have the ability to record and process information that can be disseminated to members of the school, other schools and outside the school.
Magazines can be regarded as a medium of school communication with external parties. School programs, activities and innovations of students and teachers can be documented and distributed through magazines which of course can improve the literacy culture and branding of the school itself. “Magazines are not only printed, but also in digital form that can be accessed via their respective smartphones. That's what we train until they can," said Prima again.
“Instead of making magazines, documenting achievements, innovations and superior programs are rarely carried out by schools in the regions. Hopefully with this training, students and teachers can actually produce journalistic manuscripts in the form of school magazines. That way, at least students and teachers can read their own works, be proud of their own abilities, which in turn can encourage the quality of literacy in their respective schools," he hoped.

For information, the training consists of several stages. There is a theoretical stage or equipping students and teachers with an understanding of technical writing for magazines, followed by the practice of producing manuscripts and making magazines.
In addition, there are also photography and layout practices that are directly guided by experts and practitioners in their fields. In addition, in the next stage, the team will continue to provide online technical guidance until each school participant actually produces an output in the form of a school magazine.
“This training is extraordinary and the participants are enthusiastic and enthusiastic about participating in it. Thank you to the Magetan Regency Government and the ranks of the education office, including school principals, teachers and students who are passionate about increasing digital literacy together. Hopefully from here we can continue to work together to give birth to various creativity and innovations in schools in the future, "said Prima.
