Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA-UNESA Sports Coaching Education (PKO) students held the East Java Inter-Student Swimming Championships with the theme "Building an Excellent Young Generation with Achievement in Improving the Quality of Swimming Athletes throughout East Java, during the Covid-19 Pandemic Transition" on Sunday, 19 December 2021.
The championship was attended by elementary school (SD) students from all over East Java who were divided into three classes or groups. Group A consists of participants in grades 1-2 SD, group B consists of participants in grades 3-4 SD, and the last group, C consists of participants in grades 5-6 SD. The competition consists of two groups. First, for groups A and B and second, specifically for group C. The division of the groups is intended to avoid crowds, considering that there are around 355 participants involved.
One of the activity committee, Wulan explained, there were seven swimming numbers that were competed in the championship. There are swimming 25 meters free kick, 25 meters breaststroke, 25 meters freestyle, 25 meters breaststroke, 25 meters butterfly, 50 meters freestyle and 50 meters breaststroke. “And consists of sons and daughters and is distinguished based on each competition group. Then this competition is a knockout system and 72 winners are taken," he explained.
He added that the championship was part of the implementation of the Race Management course program. Moreover, the same event has not been held for the last two years, so the aim of the competition is also to revive swimming championships at the elementary school level.
Through the swimming competition, it is hoped that the talents of swimming athletes will develop from an early age and as an effort to prepare young East Java swimmers who excel and excel at both regional and national levels. "Kids' talents can be seen from an early age, their potential can be further directed," he explained.
The event was attended by invited guests from the PKO majors. There is also a lecturer who teaches courses, namely, Dr. Imam Marsudi, M.Sc., and Chairis Fajar S.Pd., M.Pd. From the experience of holding the competition, the committee hopes to hold bigger events and maybe it can be held in several stages, such as the preliminary round, semi-finals, to the final.
