Unesa.ac.id., SURABAYA—The leadership of the Faculty of Languages and Arts (FBS), Surabaya State University (UNESA) received a visit from Ruth Goode, Director of the Regional English Language Office (RELO) and Dian Safitri, RELO Assistant, US Embassy in the T14 FBS UNESA building, on Tuesday, October 24 2023.
They were greeted directly by the Dean of FBS, Syafi'ul Anam, Ph.D; English Literature Undergraduate Study Program Coordinator, Dr. Ali Mustofa, M.Pd; English Language Education Master's Program Coordinator, Ahmad Munir, Ph.D; representative of the FBS cooperation team, Abdur Rosyid, M.TESOL; and Head of the Language Development and Promotion Section, PUI Arts and Culture, Prof. Pratiwi Retnaningdyah, Ph.D.
The Dean of FBS said, UNESA through the English Language Education Study Program and English Literature Study Program has been a partner with RELO Indonesia for more than 10 years. RELO itself is one of the offices under the US Embassy that manages English language development programs.
FBS has implemented various programs sponsored by RELO Indonesia in the form of assistance from lecturers, language and literature experts, and professional development opportunities through short programs to the United States and online lectures for lecturers.
During the meeting, FBS and RELO discussed various programs that could potentially be implemented in accordance with expertise and good practices that had been carried out previously.
Some of the programs that are considered to be future program priorities with sponsorship from RELO are the importance of the Academic Writing Center to provide scientific writing services for the academic community, and the need for global issues such as global warming, gender equality and diversity and social inclusion to be integrated into English language learning in secondary schools and universities.
RELO expresses high appreciation for the concern of the English Language Education Study Program and the English Literature Study Program in developing ecoliteracy-based materials through the National Center for ELT Materials Development (NCELTMAD) and also various teacher competency development training.
“We are committed to developing our partnership with RELO through various English language skill development programs for students, teachers and lecturers. "This commitment is also an effort to fulfill the Main Performance Indicators (IKU), especially related to the internationalization of study programs at FBS UNESA," said Syafi'ul Anam.
He hopes that the English Language Fellow (ELF) proposal from RELO can be approved. In this way, students will get direct exposure to foreign lecturers for 1 year. Apart from that, lecturers will also be able to collaborate with ELF for various Higher Education Tridharma activities. []
