SURABAYA—The prestigious Southeast Asian student sports competition, ASEAN University Games (AUG) 2024 starts from 25 June to 6 July 2024 with East Java (Surabaya-Malang) as host. Since it was first held in Chiang Mai, Thailand in 1981, Indonesia has hosted the AUG five times, namely in 1982, 1990, 2004, 2014 and 2024.
Intercollegiate sports events throughout ASEAN involves active participation from 11 ASEAN member countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Timor Leste, Brunei Darussalam, Thailand, Singapore, Cambodia and the Philippines.
"It is estimated that around 4,000 to 5,000 people "(athletes, coaches, officials, supporters, etc.) from various countries will come to East Java in AUG 2024," said Nurhasan, Chancellor of UNESA and PIC of AUG 2024.
AUG 2024 will compete in 21 sports. (sports) which include, Futsal, Petanque, Volleyball, Tennis, Swimming, Sport Climbing, 3X3 Basketball, Judo, Handball, Wushu, Bridge, Chess, Athletics, Basketball, Badminton, Archery, Beach Volleyball, Sepak Takraw, Taekwondo, Pencak Silat , and Karate.
The sport was held in a number of locations involving the East Java KONI and 9 universities, both in Surabaya and Malang. The details of the AUG 2024 sports venues are as follows.
Surabaya Cluster
- Surabaya State University (UNESA): Futsal, Petanque , Volleyball, Tennis, Athletics, and Basketball
- KONI Jatim: Swimming, and Sport Climbing
- Airlangga University (Unair): 3X3 Basketball, and Judo
- Institut Sepuluh Nopember Technology (ITS): Handball
- University of Surabaya (Ubaya): Wushu, and Bridge
- UPN Veteran East Java: Chess
Malang Cluster
- State University of Malang (UM): Badminton, Archery, and Beach Volleyball
- Brawijaya University (UB): Sepak Takraw, and Taekwondo< /li>
- Muhammadiyah University of Malang (UMM): Pencak Silat
- Islamic University of Malang (Unisma): Karate
AUG 2024 Opening Ceremony will be held at International Basketball Arena, UNESA Campus 2 Lidah Wetan, Surabaya. AUG 2024 Coordinator, Muhammad Arif Al Ardha, said that regarding preparations for the opening ceremony, his party had carried out simulations and mapping. "The performance at the opening ceremony will involve talent, consisting of national artists and students who will present performances," he explained.
The opening of the AUG was attended by athletes, coaches and team officials from each country and ranks. chairman of the ASEAN University Sports Council (AUSC). Also attending will be the Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora), the Directorate General of Diktristek Kemendikbudristek, PP BAPOMI (Central Management of the Indonesian Student Sports Development Agency), the ranks of central to regional sports federations and organizations, regional-city governments, and other related parties.< /p>
Elements Involved in the AUG 2024 Committee
This prestigious Southeast Asian level competition event involves a number of elements who are members of the AUG 2024 Committee consisting of: PP Bapomi, Indonesian National Sports Committee, Indonesian Olympic Committee, Sports Management, and Bapomi East Java.
From government elements, namely the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, the TNI-Polri, the Belmawa Directorate, the National Achievement Center and the Indonesian Talent Development Center.
In the regions it also involves the role of the East Java Provincial Government, Surabaya City Government, Malang City Government and Malang Regency Government.
Meanwhile, the higher education element consists of Surabaya State University (UNESA), Airlangga University (Unair), Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS). University of Surabaya (Ubaya), UPN Veteran East Java, State University of Malang (UM), University of Brawijaya (UB), University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), and Islamic University of Malang (Unisma).
