Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA-The Center for Character Development and Counseling Services (P2KLBK) Universitas Negeri Surabaya held a series of online Character Education Workshops with the theme "Building a Golden Generation in a Pandemic Period Through Character Education and BK Services Based on Local Wisdom" on Monday, October 18, 2021. The event was attended by students UNESA and from various universities throughout Indonesia, some even from high school.
At the opening of the event, the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Alumni UNESA, Dr. Agus Hariyanto, M. Kes, Head of UNESA P2KLBK Dr. Miftahul Jannah, S.Psi., M.Si, Head of the Institute for Learning and Professional Development (LP3 UNESA) Dr. Bachtiar S Bachri, M.Pd., and Counseling from IKIP PGRI Bali Dr. Rr. Dwi Umi Badriyah, M.Pd as a speaker.
Dr. Agus Hariyanto, M. Kes., stated that character building and education are closely related to the student affairs field or field three. Currently, field three is carrying out character education for the class of 2020 students which is divided into three waves. The goal is to create UNESA students who are smart and have character so that they will be able to become future leaders.
Intelligence is not only about intellectual, but also emotional, social and religious as well as aesthetic intelligence. This intelligence is based on a character that is in accordance with the personality and rules that exist in Indonesia. To make it happen, it takes a joint role from the campus, lecturers, and students themselves. "Character certainly must be educated, trained and accustomed to the smallest things," he said. "In order for educators to be able to educate and shape the character of students, educators must also have character and the campus must also have character," he added.
He hopes that UNESA students can take part and be active in seminars and workshops, one of which can be by sending scientific articles or papers. So far, there are many students who often send papers at national and international seminars. However, it could be added more. If necessary, each study program and department encourages its students to have a target for involvement in seminars. "The work of UNESA students must color international-scale discussions and seminars as a form of UNESA's contribution to the world of science and later can have an impact on rankings," his message was motivating.
"Students are agents of change," said Dr. Bachtiar S Bachri, M.Pd in his speech. He added that on the shoulders of students there is great hope for the nation. It is in the hands of the students that the future direction of this nation is at stake. Therefore, the label and the opportunity to be a student should not be wasted. Take advantage of it as much as possible to develop yourself, improve competence and strengthen character, so that later graduates are ready to contribute to the nation in various lines and fields. "Besides in the classroom and organization, learning to develop oneself must also be done through seminars or workshops like this," he said.
He appreciated the character based on local wisdom that was carried out in the activity. According to him, it is a point of strength and its own color for character education in Indonesia. The idea of P2KLBK is extraordinary to raise the value of local wisdom that can be seeded in the context of current and future character education, especially during the pandemic.
Dr. Miftahul Jannah, S.Psi., M.Si, stated that the workshop activity was an effort to introduce character education and counseling guidance services to students and students with the aim of building a golden generation that is aware of morals and ethics in life and as a means of education and branding towards the progress of the nation and state. The workshop was held for four days, starting from October 18-23 2021 with the highlight of the event being the National Seminar on Character Development on October 23, 2021.
The activity was packaged in such a way as to provide knowledge as well as practitioners about counseling and guidance services and how to develop character in the future. According to him, counseling guidance is divided into two, namely preventive and curative. Preventive is more directed at efforts to develop character, while curative is about how to provide appropriate counseling services with various cultural settings. "There is character development through character education learning, some through foreign language learning and that includes multicultural character settings," he explained.
Dr. Rr. Dwi Badriyah, M.Pd., Kons., on that occasion delivered material on "Indiegenous in Cross-Cultural Counseling". For him, students must be optimistic and passionate about being pioneers and carriers of change in society. This nation has a lot of potential that has not been fully exploited. It is the children and students who must be involved, capable of seizing opportunities, providing solutions to opportunities and that is part of the contribution and duty of the nation's generation.
For example, students in the field of counseling guidance, can develop themselves and continue to innovate by designing or developing media or technology-based or application-based counseling guidance services. He hopes that this activity can inspire the participants about how counseling and its relationship with indigenous peoples are or how counseling is effective and targeted. “We also have an obligation in counselling. We have to see which sides and approaches are effective for developing children's character,” he said. (azhar/zam)
