Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA - Welcoming the UTBK-SBMPTN registration process, the State University of Surabaya again socialized study programs and majors in the UNESA Virtual Campus Expo (UVCE) which was broadcast live on Unesa's Official YouTube channel on Friday, March 25, 2022. The resource persons who attended were Dr. Retno Tri Hariastuti, M.Pd., Head of the Counseling Guidance Study Program and accompanied by Dr. Meita Santi Budiani, S. Psi., M. Psi. as Head of Psychology Study Program.
For information, the registration of prospective new students, especially in the 2022 SNMPTN pathway, the Psychology study program has the highest rank in UNESA. Ohy, maybe there are still many who think that the Psychology study program and the Counseling Guidance study program are the same, even though they are different. Simply put, the scope of Psychology is broader than Guidance and Counseling.
Know Yourself and Choose a Study Program
Retno Tri Hariastuti stated that the courses in Psychology that students like the most are Personality Psychology, Observation and Psychodiagnostics. While Guidance and Counseling has many courses related to Psychology, students are provided with counseling skills starting from the basic skills of meeting other people, asking questions, recognizing the characteristics of people and their problems and techniques in problem solving.
Before choosing a major, participants need to understand their potential and interests first. Therefore, participants need to ask themselves;
“What abilities do I have?”
"What talent do I have?"
"What's my real interest?"
In addition, you must also understand the characteristics of yourself. After that, then to the aspect of understanding the chosen study program including future work or career prospects. Do not forget the support from parents. "From the perspective of parents, they must understand the characteristics of their children, so that when interacting or socializing with the child they can be one frequency or connected," he explained.
“What is often overlooked by prospective students is when they graduate, what kind of work or career do they want to have? Sometimes they just want to go to college and later they can just work. It's good that everything has to be planned, so that it is clear and focused," said Meita Santi Budiani.

The role of parents
Regarding the selection of study programs, it is sometimes stressful. Therefore, parents must have a role. Parents must study the characteristics of their children, help children identify themselves, as a companion who invites children to talk and invites refreshing so that the child's mind does not get dizzy.
Meita Santi Budiani continued, now there are many assumptions out there that have an impact on decreasing motivation to go to college. One of them, assumes that lectures are only theoretical and meaningless if they are not taught by lecturers.
“Lectures are not only theory, but practice. It is packaged from the first semester to the final semester, plus the MBKM program which provides more opportunities for students to develop themselves both on campus and off campus; in society and in companies or industries,” he explained. [UNESA PR]
