Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA) held a Traumatic Counseling Training for Surabaya City Senior High School BK teachers some time ago. The training was intended to equip BK teachers in Surabaya to anticipate and help victims of bullying at school.
The chief executive of the activity, Dr. Muchamad Nursalim, M.Sc., said that the training was a collaboration between the BK FIP UNESA Department and the Surabaya City High School MGBK. There were about 20 participants involved in the training. The aim is to increase the understanding of high school counselors or BK teachers in Surabaya about bullying and its effects on post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
In addition, it is also to improve the ability of high school counselors or BK teachers in Surabaya in reducing child trauma triggered by bullying by using traumatic counseling. According to him, the training is important to deal with various traumas and anxieties experienced by children at school. Traumatic conditions can be triggered by many things, including fighting and even bullying.
"Being bullied by a friend or after a fight, children can sometimes be excessively anxious which can have an impact on their learning and mental growth," he said. To overcome such things at school and equip teachers to anticipate and deal with traumatic children at school, he and his team provide the training.
The training was carried out for three months on a scheduled basis which consisted of the delivery of material and counseling practices in each school.
In the material delivery session, three presenters were involved; 1) Dr. Mochamad Nursalim, M.Sc., counseling and psychology expert, the main expertise mastered in this activity is traumatic counseling and PTSD; 2) Dra. Titin Indah Pratiwio, M.Pd., counseling and psychology expert, the main expertise mastered in this activity is bullying; Evi Winingsih, S.Pd, M.Pd., is also an expert in counseling and psychology, the main expertise being mastered in this activity is traumatic counseling.
Dra. Titin Indah Pratiwi, M.Pd., said that trauma sufferers need to be healed, one of them with an eclectic approach or intervention model. The intervention or treatment given should focus on psychosocial problems faced by trauma sufferers as counselees, as well as through the use of various methods or techniques.
One of the trauma management strategies can be through BESCB counseling. This counseling is based on the assumption that the traumatic memories experienced by a person are stored in the subcortical-subconscious brain area.
Research shows, he continued, when someone experiences trauma, there are parts of the brain that regulate emotions become more active and uncontrollable. For this reason, people who have experienced traumatic experiences must immediately receive psychological assistance to eliminate the perceived disturbances.
"Hopefully with this training, teachers are skilled in overcoming and dealing with trauma that appears in schools, so that schools become comfortable and friendly places for children to learn and develop themselves," he hoped. [UNESA PR]
