Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA - For generations, majakane and gambier seeds are believed to be often used by the public as herbal medicines for female diseases. Two professors of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Surabaya State University (UNESA) Prof. Dr. Titik Taufikurohmah, M.Sc., and Prof. Dr. Suyatno, M.Si succeeded in scientifically proving the efficacy of these herbs.
“So far, our society often uses this herbal ingredient to treat vaginal discharge, itching of the female organs and so on. However, there is no scientific research. Therefore, we research and carry out a number of tests," he said at a press conference on the 2nd Floor of the Chemistry Building, UNESA Ketintang Campus, on Thursday, July 14, 2022.
From the results of preclinical tests and clinical trials conducted, the ingredients of majakane and gambir seeds plus the composition of ingredients from turmeric, betel, henna leaves and alum contain secondary metabolites that have the function of defending against disease, especially free radicals.
The content of these compounds is able to prevent and cure vaginal discharge, excess fluid, itching to cervical and ovarian cancer. This claim is based on the results of trials on 90 volunteers and more than 400 herbal users.

In addition, they also found new data about other properties of the majakane herb. It also has an effect on curing diseases such as hemorrhoids, prostate and covid. Of course these new properties require further testing.
"The test will be the Corona virus first if it is in vitro using a tool. Because Covid is still being handled by the government, we have to work together with hospitals. Or let me try it on people with the flu first, not the corona virus. I will convey this data to the ethics committee. For example, if you want to be accompanied for research, of course we are ready," he explained.
The professor who is also the Head of the Business Incubation Center, LPPM UNESA continued, it is time for herbal ingredients to be given scientific attention as alternative medicines to cure various diseases.
“Our society is rich in herbal heritage. Friends, you should know that herbal medicines have minimal side effects, but their benefits are not as direct as chemical drugs. It needs its own process or stages," he said.
Siti Rahmah directly felt the efficacy of the Majakanza herb. The 52-year-old woman complained of vaginal discharge. I've been taking medication everywhere, but haven't gotten any results yet and have given up hope. Finally he got the drug and after taking a few times, his complaints disappeared. "Until now, my complaints have been cured, thank God," said the resident of Gunung Anyar Tengah, Surabaya.
Nur said the same thing. The 48-year-old woman had menstrual disorders. After consuming the herbs, he said, the complaints disappeared and menstruation returned to normal. "Alhamdulillah, it's smooth again after drinking this herb a few times. I drink this when the complaints just come. I think it would be better if I drank regularly for prevention," he said.
For information, research Prof. Dr. Titik Taufikurohmah, M.Sc., and Prof. Dr. Suyatno, M.Si funded by UNESA and PT. Kanza Ekselensia Utama for these two years. “Hopefully more and more of the efficacy of herbal medicines can be found and tested scientifically in the future. That way, there will be more and more alternative medicines that can be used to treat various old or emerging diseases such as Covid," said Prof Suyatno. [UNESA PR]
