Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA-The Department of English Language and Literature has been running the Digital Extensive Reading program since the 2019 academic year. The success of this program received RELO's attention during its visit to UNESA on Thursday, November 18, 2021. RELO then provided assistance in the form of sending a Virtual English Language Fellow (VELF) or guest lecturer virtually for one year.
This VELF program is at students of the 2020 English Language and Literature Department, both English and English Literature Education Study Programs. Assistance in developing English skills was guided by Rachel Wang, a guest lecturer, and produced a draft bilingual children's story book based on local wisdom.
The receipt of drafts of story books written by students of the class of 2020 made RELO offer grants for editing and printing these story books. Currently, the grant is in the permit process from the US Federal, and if it is realized it will be distributed to schools and used as material for students to carry out literacy thematic Community Service Programs and the Merdeka Learning Campus Merdeka program, such as the Teaching Campus.
In addition to literacy development, the VELF program managed by the US Embassy RELO also runs in the form of Community of Practice with English Department lecturers. In this CoP, the lecturers and Rachel discussed and simulated practices in learning English. Dr. Sujarwanto, M.Pd., Vice Chancellor for Planning and Cooperation welcomed the cooperation in this field. He hopes that this collaboration can have an impact on the quality of literacy in Indonesia. [UNESA PR]
