Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA-Adinda Nur Qomariyah and Oktaviani Tri Saprika understand very well that talent must continue to be honed and trained, one of which is through competition. For this reason, the two undergraduate students of Indonesian Language Education, Faculty of Languages and Arts (FBS) UNESA often demonstrate their writing skills in various competitions and produce many achievements.
In the National Essay Competition (PENA) held by the Student Scientific Unit, Faculty of Education (FIP) of Semarang State University (UNNES) last October, for example, they won first place. The competition was themed "The Role of Students as Agents of Change in Facing the Era of Disruption 4.0 for Future Generations" which was attended by around 80 student participants from various campuses throughout Indonesia.
In the competition, Adinda and Okta presented an essay entitled "Cirkus (Rat Repellent): Smart Farming Tool Innovation for Rat Repellents Based on Ultrasonic Waves and Solar to Realize Self-Sufficiency in Lamongan's Food".
The essay departs from agricultural conditions in the field, especially in Lamongan which is attacked by rats and it has an impact on the decrease in farmers' yields. So far, farmers have eradicated these pests using pesticides, which of course have a long impact on the environmental ecosystem.
"What materials and tools can be used to eradicate rat pests, but not too much impact on the environmental ecosystem," they asked at the time. Then, they look for various references and conduct literature studies and discuss with farmers including several related parties.
As a result, ultrasonic waves and solar cells as an energy source can actually be used to repel mice. "We finally proposed this small research to the competition and thank God we won," said Adinda.
Adinda hopes that their ideas or findings can be useful for the community. The championship title can be a motivation for them to continue to make achievements in the future. According to him, the competition is not only for champions, but more importantly it can test ideas and innovations for the community. “By participating in the competition, we will know where our ideas are lacking and where they will lead. With competitions, we can refine ideas through the input of friends or the jury. This is also an exercise to get used to making scientific works,” he said.
He also hopes that this achievement can be an inspiration and motivation for others. “Our job is just to try, study and pray until we really know the maximum limit of effort and enjoy the sweetness of endeavor. If you fail, get up and try again, stay patient and be with your parents' prayers and support. That's our principle," he said. [UNESA PR]
