Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA-Dozens of participants from various faculties of the State University of Surabaya (UNESA) demonstrated their debating skills at the 11th Floor Auditorium of the Rectorate Building, Lidah Wetan Campus, Monday 30-31 May 2022. They were selected participants for the Indonesian Student Debate Competition (KDMI) and the National University Debating Championship (NUDC). ) on a university scale pioneered by the UNESA Debating Union (UDU) or the UNESA Debate UKM.
The selection was attended by 31 students for KDMI and 32 students for NUDC. Participants came from 7 faculties and 1 vocational program, each consisting of 3 teams. The KDMI selection took place on Monday, 30 May 2022 and the NUDC selection on Tuesday, 31 May 2022. Those who managed to become champions, will represent UNESA following KDMI and NUDC at the national level. NUDC participants who won at the national level, will represent Indonesia at the international level.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Alumni, Dr. Agus Hariyanto, M.Kes., said that students must have debating skills. It involves argumentation skills and structured conveying skills to others. It also involves communication skills and critical thinking.
According to him, the debate competition is an opportunity to develop students' soft skills. “The demands of the current century, students besides having hard skills also have good soft skills. This is what we hope for, students learn not only in class, but also hone skills in activities such as debates, speeches and so on,” he said.
The man who likes tennis added that since he was involved in KDMI and NUDC, UNESA has recorded several achievements. The UNESA team was ranked in the top 3 nationally in 2018. Recently, UNESA participants have not been able to penetrate the national top 10. “I hope that the winners who will become UNESA representatives at the national KDMI and NUDC can show their best abilities and can enter the national top 10. Especially up to the big 3. It was incredible. I believe you can do it," he said excitedly.

Faradesi as the UDU committee explained that there are 2 debate structures that are usually used, the Asian parliamentary and the British parliamentary. This year's KDMI UNESA selection uses the British parliamentary debate structure. One team has 2 people and 1 person with a maximum speech of 7 minutes 20 seconds. There is also a point of information (PIO) made by the opposing team after the first minute to the sixth minute.
The best speaker in the KDMI selection was won by Salsabila Romadona from the 2018 Nutrition Science study program, Agung Putra Sahidan from the 2019 Communication Science class, and Difa Andrian Puspanto from Electrical Engineering class 2020. Meanwhile, the team that managed to advance to the grand final round were 1) the Faculty of Science team. Social and Legal 1 which consists of Agung Putra Sahidan from Communication Studies batch 2019 and Ananda Fatimah Zahra also from Communication Studies batch 2020.
Furthermore, 2) the Faculty of Engineering 2 team consisting of Difa Andrian Puspanto from Electrical Engineering class 2020 and Salsabila Romadona from Nutrition Science class 2018; 3) the Faculty of Economics and Business 1 team consisting of Dubby Ariya Mahendra from Management class of 2019 and Febthian Linden Harahap of Accounting study program batch 2020. The grand final jury team was Landry Dwiyoga, S.Pd., Alfia Sari, S.Pd., and Rusly Hidayah, S.Si., M.Pd.
The best NUDC speaker was won by Muhammad Axel Radityoadji from the 2020 Electrical Engineering Study Program, Mohammad Naufal Hilmy from the 2021 English Literature, and M. Arya Barizi from the 2020 Japanese Language Education Program.
The three teams that made it to the NUDC grand final, 1) the Faculty of Engineering 1 team consisting of Muhammad Axel Radityoadji from Electrical Engineering class 2020 and Jasmine Nadhiyfa Syanni from Fashion Design Education class 2017;
Then, 2) the Faculty of Languages and Arts 1 team consisting of Stefanny Florencia Elman from English Education batch 2020, and M. Arya Barizi from Japanese Language Education batch 2021; 3) a team from the Faculty of Economics and Business 1 consisting of Farid Achmad Wisanggeni from the Economics Study Program class of 2019 and Fiki Andriansah from Management class 2020.
