
Expert from the University of Cumbria UK, Jack Whitehead delivered material about transformative education.
Unesa.ac.id. SURABAYA--Basic Education Master's Study Program (Dikdas), Faculty of Education (FIP), Surabaya State University (UNESA) again held the International Conference on Transformative Educational Research and Sustainable Development (TERSD) online on Saturday-Sunday, 19-20 October 2024.
The theme raised in the fourth year of implementation is "Transformative Educational Empowerment in the Landscape of Cultural and Religious Diversity," which was attended by a number of speakers from various countries.
They namely, Peter C. Taylor professor from Murdoch University Australia; Jack Whitehead professor at the University of Cumbria United Kingdom; Bal Chandra Luitel, professor at Kathmandu University, Nepal; and Pratiwi Retnaningdyah, professor at UNESA.
Coordinator of the Master's Program in Basic Education, Neni Mariana, said that this activity was attended by participants from a number of countries, such as Australia, Nepal, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, UK, Thailand, South Africa , United States, to India. The number of papers collected was 42 works and 38 presenters.
According to him, this agenda is a form of the study program's commitment to responding to developments and dynamics in the world of education from various perspectives and scientific disciplines.
“Through activities Today, we study different education systems, different ways of thinking, interdisciplinary knowledge from various sources. "From that, we can formulate appropriate and sustainable policies going forward," he said.
The Dean of FIP, Nursalim said that this international conference could enrich treasures of educational science and experience of implementing education in a number of countries. Of course, this can be an important reference in strengthening the world of education in Indonesia.
"This agenda is also a forum for connecting with each other, to increase the awareness of educators in changing education which is increasingly massive. Hopefully this conference can encourage teachers to "be more sensitive in dealing with educational issues, both from teachers, students and other aspects of education," said the FIP professor.
In the material session, Peter C. Taylor explained about the environment and education Humans in treating the environment have a big impact on changes in the earth, namely climate change, plastic pollution, loss of biodiversity, loss of cultural diversity.
"How can we educators who apply STEM respond to these changes by involving students in caring for the environment in a sustainable manner," he said.

UNESA professor, Pratiwi Retnaningdyah emphasized the importance of fostering ecoliteracy from an early age through innovative policies and activities in schools.
From this problem, he emphasized to educators to teach students about cultural knowledge, relationship or connectivity knowledge, critical cultural knowledge, and practical knowledge, as well as basic environmental knowledge.
Next, Pratiwi Retnaningdyah highlighted ecoliteracy. According to him, ecoliteracy is the ability to understand natural systems to maintain the continuity of nature. "This is important to instill knowledge in students so that they can maintain the sustainability of nature," he said.
The ways that teachers can teach students start from making sustainable choices, making positive contributions, and taking action. -positive actions.
In addition, teachers can implement adiwiyata school policies, Pancasila student profiles, integrating the curriculum, experimental learning, collaboration with environmental communities.
On In the next session, Jack Whitehead discussed the theory of transformative education in the context of cultural and religious diversity for the development of human values and belief systems. Meanwhile, Bal Chandra Luitel explained the development of character and leadership values through yoga, reflexivity and emancipatory interests.[]
