Unesa.ac.id., SURABAYA Indonesia is a diverse country from many aspects. Diversity is both an opportunity and a strength. However, if it is not cared for and managed properly, it will become a source of social or community conflict.
Based on the experience of Komjen Pol. Dr. (H.C). Drs. Anang Revandoko, M.I.Kom., at the Police Mobile Brigade which is used as a scientific study on "Media as Conflict Resolution in Indonesian Society", there are two things that have the most potential for social conflict in Indonesia, namely ethnicity and religion.
Indonesia, consists of several tribes consisting of Javanese 56 percent, Sumatra 21.68 percent, Sulawesi 7.36 percent, Kalimantan 6.15 percent, Bali Nusa Tenggara 5.54 percent, and Maluku-Papua 3.17 percent.
Then from the aspect of religion, Islam 86.88 percent, Catholic 8.42 percent, Christian 7.49 percent, Hindu 1.7 percent, Buddhist 0.75 percent and others 0.03 percent. According to him, this diversity is an invaluable wealth for the Indonesian nation that needs to be cared for, one of which is through the spirit of mutual cooperation.
Based on the facts, there are still social conflicts in a number of areas. Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), in the 2019-2023 period there were 68 open social conflicts or riots in Indonesia. 1.7 trillion," said the Commander of the Brimob Polri Corps (Dankor) in a scientific oration for awarding Doctor Honoris Causa at Surabaya State University (UNESA) on Monday, August 14 2023.
There are two approaches used in dealing with conflict; security and non-security approaches. According to him, not all conflict issues can use a security approach alone. However, the language approach is also the main thing.
"Learn from the Jayapura and Wamena cases in 2019, it was because of the wrong use of language. Therefore, the conflict resolution approach can be a security approach combined with a language approach. or mass communication," he explained.
In that context, language as a conflict resolution is understood from two aspects. First, language as local wisdom-based media, such as Rumah Betang as a conflict resolution center in Central Kalimantan and Bakar Batu in Papua. Second, language is a symbolic power used by the state, institution or institutions in resolving conflicts.
"We (Brimob) are closer to the source of the problem. The state is present to the source of the problem. We are the representative of the state. We must be present and the state must not lose to disturbances and threats to the integrity of the Republic of Indonesia," he said. An effective approach to handling conflict is multidimensional in nature, such as a security approach combined with a communication strategy through the use of language as a medium. [*]
