Famous Indonesian writer and Professor of the Faculty of Languages and Arts UNESA, Prof. Dr. Budi Darma, M.A passed away at the Islamic Hospital A. Yani, Surabaya, on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at around 06.00 WIB.
The news of the departure of the great writer made the ongoing 2021 UNESA Graduation event suddenly stop. The atmosphere was suddenly tense. On the sidelines of the graduation procession, the leadership led by the Chair of the UNESA Senate and all the graduation participants took a moment of silence for the departure of the famous writer who was born in Rembang, April 25, 1937.
Prof. Dr. Nurhasan, M.Kes representing the entire UNESA family said that UNESA felt the loss of this extraordinary and many meritorious figure. According to him, he is a prolific writer. His work is scattered everywhere. Dozens of books have been published and hundreds of articles have been published in various sections of national and even international media.
A retired lecturer in the English Language and Literature department, he served as Chancellor of UNESA (IKIP, formerly) for the period 1984-1988. "All of us (Unesa residents, ed) are deeply saddened. A senior, our teacher, as well as our role model have all left today. Please pray that he will be accepted by His side and strengthened by the entire family left behind," said Cak Hasan.
Because of his work and love of literature, during his life, Prof. Budi Darma received a series of awards. He had received an award from the Mayor of Madya Surabaya at that time as a Surabaya citizen who excelled in the field of literature for two consecutive times (1987-1988). The Governor of East Java was also awarded the award as an accomplished citizen in the arts in 2004.
Many works that brought his name won the literature. Olenka (1983), one of his works, won first place in the 1980 DKJ Romance Contest and also won the 1983 DKJ Literature Prize. In 1984 he received the ASEAN Literature Prize.
Not only that, he also received the Jakarta Arts Council Literature Award, the SEA Write Award, and the Indonesian Government's Art Award. As an academic, he is often invited to lecture, teach, examine candidates for undergraduate or doctoral literature, and be involved in literary research at home and abroad.
Budi Darma's big name is not only on campus, but is also known nationally, even internationally. He is a writer, author and writer who is influential in the development of literature in Indonesia with his prestigious and monumental works.
