Unesa.uc.id, SURABAYA—Moving from the vision of PTN-BH, Surabaya State University (UNESA) is then dedicated to strengthening external cooperation, including with the Veterans National Development University or UPN Jatim.
On Tuesday, 17 October 2023, the Communication Science (Ikom) study program, Faculty of Social and Legal Sciences (FISH) UNESA held a collaborative workshop with UPN Jatim on the 2nd Floor of the FISH Building, UNESA Ketintang Campus.
Workshop with the theme 'Methods This Social Network Research brought in UPN lecturer, Dr. Catur Suratnoaji, M.Sc. This workshop was a trigger for cooperation between the two universities.
Catur Suratnoaji said that big data is a collection of data in cyberspace. Social media is one of the many sources of data that can be accessed easily, starting from mining data to using it as a source of accountable research data.
According to him, big data can be used for multidisciplinary research opportunities, one of which is polls in the political field so that we can find out predictions about the competition for the 2024 presidential-vice presidential candidate pair.
Through conversations on social media, research is also equipped to monitor policies, monitor brand and company image as well as candidate image.
"As long as there are controversial and interesting issues, that's where our momentum for research will be," said the man who has focused on big data research for the past five years.
With the help of his own software and data providers, researchers are made easy to start mining data. The cost of searching and downloading data is no longer a big problem for researchers.
Now, there are many services available such as NodeXl, Academia and other additional software. "Big data has been collected in cyberspace, we just have to decide whether the research will be qualitative or quantitative," he said.
Communication Science Coordinator, Dr. Anam Miftakhul Huda, S.Kom., M.I.Kom., assessed this activity as an opportunity to improve the quality of lecturers in research. "The quality of research is not only done through field surveys, but also by relying on data bases or Big Data as a result of digitalization," he said.
The quality of this research can develop by paying attention to current trends, both in in the fields of communication and social sciences.
In responding to opportunities for collaboration with UNESA, Catur Suratnoaji, acknowledged that big data could be an alternative strategy for UNESA PTN-BH.
“To be honest, business "In the realm of big data there are huge opportunities, especially in the business of buying and selling data to large companies, establishing data study centers and research," he said.
This workshop is aimed at adding new insight into the basics of conducting Big Data-based research, one of which is through social media. Apart from that, this activity is also a collaboration between UNESA and UPN East Java, namely with lecturer mobility and research collaboration.
This collaboration also supports the progress of Key Performance Indicators (IKU) for both PTNs, especially at IKU 3, namely lecturers with activities outside campus. []
