Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA-The book “Snapping Terror(ism): Ex-convicts Speak, Families Witness” which was launched by the Ideology Development Center (PPI), LPPM, State University of Surabaya (UNESA) on May 31, 2022 and was a gift for the Birthday of Pancasila, May 1, 2022. The work written by Much. Khoiri, Mukhzamilah, Ahmad Bashri and Mohammad Syahidul Haq.
Drs. much. Khoiri, M.Sc., revealed that the book contains a collection of confessions and stories from 15 former convicts, as well as testimonies from their families. "Their confessions are actually their life history, since they were exposed, involved until they repented," he explained.
The ex-convict, said Khoiri, used to be a terrorist group involved in attacks or bombs in several places. It is hoped that their life story will become an important lesson for the community so that they do not fall into the network of radicalism-terrorism.
What can be learned from them? Khoiri continued, of course their initial experience was to know and enter into this understanding. From there, the public can find out the entry of this dangerous understanding, it can be through an invitation from friends, family, husband or wife and so on. That way, the public can fortify themselves from exposure to radicalism-terrorism.
"From that we also know that the doctrine of this understanding is so strong and dangerous for the nation's generation," he explained.
Substantially, this book is expected to be able to 'trap' terrorist networks and understandings slowly so they don't roam around, and provide 'awareness' to the public about how they attract members. "Therefore, this book uses the diction 'INSERT' with the connotation of capturing terrorists and securing the ideology of terrorism so that it does not spread to other people," he explained.

Through this book, readers will be presented with various realities from various ex-convicts from various regions, from cities to the tip of the island of Java. It is not easy to raise the stories of these ex-convicts. How they began to be brainwashed, fed with various radical information, build a sense of the spirit of charity, and so on. "I think anyone can be (affected, ed)) as long as they don't have broad views, those who see religion as something narrow," he explained.
Coupled with the testimony of ex-convict families, this book is different and important to present to the community, including the younger generation. As stated by Jack Harun, a former convict from Central Java who was present at the launch of the book, radicalism can target anyone, ordinary people, university students, graduates from Islamic boarding schools.
This book is one of the real movements carried out by UNESA through the Ideology Development Center (PPI) in taking steps to prevent radicalism-terrorism in Indonesia.
Mukhzamilah, S.S., S.Pd., M.Ed., the head of the book writing team, explained that in addition to the book, the book 'Countering Radicalism on Campus' was previously launched. Then carry out various movements aimed at increasing the knowledge of the academic community and the public about the dangers of radical ideology. PPI also formed the garda nation community, which was represented by representative students from each faculty to provide special information to other students.
"If there are signs that his friend has been exposed to radicalism, he must immediately be alert and take an approach," he said.
Mukhzamilah emphasized that if you find friends or lecturers who are felt to have symptoms of being exposed to radicalism, immediately report and coordinate with the UNESA Ideology Development Center (PPI). With one bold action can save them from the trap of terrorism.
“Through their experiences, hopefully they can open the veil about how these understandings came in, how they got involved, and what are the factors. Through this book, readers are expected to be more aware of the notions of radicalism and terrorism. Preventing this understanding is our collective duty," he concluded. [UNESA PR]
