Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA-There are many activities that can be held to commemorate the 2022 National Awakening Day. One of them can be by holding a ceremony like the Surabaya State University (UNESA) on Friday, 20 May 2022 at the Rectorate Lobby of the Lidah Wetan Campus, Surabaya.
The National Awakening Day ceremony was attended by the UNESA Chancellor, the ranks of the vice chancellors and all officials and the academic community around the 'One Step Ahead' campus. The ceremony, which took place offline and online, was solemn and smooth.
As the supervisor of the ceremony, on that occasion, the Chancellor Prof. Dr. Nurhasan, M.Kes., delivered the remarks of the Minister of Communication and Information of the Republic of Indonesia on the 114th anniversary of National Awakening Day, May 20, 2022. “Let's rise together is the theme of this year's celebration. This is a form of appeal so that we can rise together from the Covid-19 pandemic that has hit for the last 2 years," said Cak Hasan.
Commemoration of the National Awakening Day is not only ceremonial, but also understands the historical essence of national awakening. President Soekarno established the birth of Budi Utomo (Boedi Oetomo) as a revival of Indonesian nationalism. At that time there were threats, divisions between groups and ideologies in the midst of Indonesia's struggle to maintain independence from the Dutch who wanted to return to power.
Budi Utomo's spirit in gathering strength and preventing national divisions must be internalized into the hearts of the nation's children. Budi Utomo is the first organization in Indonesia that is national and modern in the history of the independence movement.

It was founded by Soetomo with the students of the School tot Opleiding van Inlandsche Artsen (Stovia) on May 20, 1908. This organization was born to catch up with the Indonesian people from other nations. The organization unites regional movements into national movements with the ultimate goal of independence.
As stated in his first congress, Budi Utomo aims to guarantee life as a respectable nation with a focus on the movement in the fields of education, teaching and culture. Budi Utomo has laid down the ideals of the nation, namely to liberate, humanize and advance the homeland and nation as well as to create a life of a nation that is honorable and dignified in the eyes of the world.
The spirit of Boedi Oetomo is still very relevant to be contextualized in today's national life. "We should interpret the national awakening as a collective effort to strengthen national unity," he explained. “We must also translate this spirit in various fields, including in universities. That spirit must color our struggle in various positions at UNESA to make the best contribution to a more advanced and superior Indonesia," said Cak Hasan. [UNESA PR]
