Unesa.ac.id., SURABAYA—Everyone has different motivations to achieve opportunity to study abroad. There are those who are encouraged by their friends, and there are those who want to support their parents' work like Aldien Maulana did.
Bachelor's Student of Informatics Engineering, Faculty of Engineering (FT), Surabaya State University (UNESA ) took part in the 2024 Indonesia International Stundent Mobility Award (IISMA) because he wanted to make him proud and follow in the footsteps of his parents; Rony Emanuel and Guritna Kusuma Dewi.
“I graduated from National Taiwan Normal University, Taiwan by taking a data science course with the reason of following in the footsteps of my father who was an application consultant. "I want to study IT in my father's field of work," said the class of 2022 student from Blitar.
Aldien will also learn about business strategy as an effort to deepen his mother's field of study, namely selling food online. He hopes that studying business in Taiwan can be a provision to develop his mother's business.
In addition, he will study the history of Southeast Asia and William Shakespeare which is based on his interest in history, including life history, roles and the influence of the poet Romeo and Juliet.
“All courses are based on areas that I am interested in and also thanks to encouragement and motivation to want to follow in the footsteps and explore what my parents did, ” said Aldien.
Apart from that, Aldien also plans to join a community, explore Taiwan and learn about its culture.
How did you register for IISMA in the first place? Aldien's story began when he received information about IISMA from his friends who also wanted to take part in the international student exchange program. He was interested in taking advantage of this opportunity.
For him, the opportunity to study abroad doesn't come twice, that's why he really took advantage of it by preparing various requirements and registration requirements, as well as asking for guidance or assistance from his friends. .
“I have nothing to lose by trying to join IISMA. Even if I fail, I can still gain experience and learn from that failure. "If I pass, I can learn more things out there," said the only child.
His struggle to get into IISMA is not easy, he has to meet language proficiency requirements with a certain score. Aldien had to take the Duolingo English Test, the results of which were less than optimal on the first try.
He tried again for the second time, thanks to the support and assistance of the UNESA Office of International Affairs (OIA) team. , he finally got a satisfactory score.
The next challenge was the interview process, which is the determining test for the IISMA program. With only one week to prepare, he completed his preparations by looking for various examples of interview questions, practicing with friends and family.
“Even though I had practiced, I was still nervous during the interview stage. "It turns out, my training and struggle had results, I managed to pass the interview smoothly and an announcement came out that I had passed," he explained.
Aldien hopes that after returning from Taiwan he can share his knowledge and experience with his friends, too. I want to be a child who supports my parents, becomes a young person who is useful for Indonesia.
"Hopefully my journey to pass IISMA can be an insight for other students. I hope that the number of UNESA students who "IISMA will accept more and more people and remain enthusiastic even though the process is not easy," he hoped.[]
