Unesa.ac.id. SURABAYA—The International Summer Course program, a collaboration between the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of Surabaya State University (UNESA) with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and PT Apexindo Pratama Duta Tbk (APEX) gave an impression and experience for participants from various countries.
They expressed this at the closing of the 2024 International Summer Course at Auditorium C14, UNESA Ketintang Campus, Surabaya, on Friday, August 16 2024. Mustafa Zain, one of the students from USM said that the program was at UNESA and Surabaya exceeded his expectations. He gained many new experiences and insights.
"This is an extraordinary experience. I learned many new things here, and Indonesian culinary delights are very impressive, especially the taste of tempeh and tapai which are more savory than in Malaysia. I really enjoyed it," he said.
According to him, even though Indonesia and Malaysia have the same race. However, there are many different and varied things in Indonesia which provide additional insight for him. "The culinary tastes here are similar, but there are distinctive characteristics that give a special impression to the connoisseurs, including me," he said.
The Summer Course entitled "Superfood in Indonesia" started on August 12. The 24 student participants from various countries, including Malaysia, the Philippines, Iran, Papua New Guinea and Saudi Arabia had the opportunity to explore culinary and culture Indonesia in the City of Heroes
Throughout the week, participants gain invaluable experience in various activities such as lectures, workshops and city tours, which focus on important topics such as food biotechnology, culinary Indonesia, fermentation processes, and food waste management.
On the last day, participants took part in a workshop on making eco-enzymes guided by Indah Ardiningsih and Reni Ambarwati at the UNESA Labschool Kindergarten they gain in a practical context, while strengthening their commitment to sustainable practices.
In her speech, Rooselyna Ekawati, Deputy Dean I for Learning, PKM, Student Affairs and FMIPA Alumni, as well as program advisor expressed her appreciation for the enthusiasm and the commitment of the participants.
"Cross-border collaboration like this must continue to be strengthened, because it is very important in facing global challenges, especially in terms of food security, nutrition and public health," said the FMIPA professor.
Amira, one of the program committee members, hopes that this program will continue to make a real contribution to the development of food science, sustainable agriculture and cultural exchange between countries. He also expressed his desire to involve more participants from various countries in the future, so that this program can continue to develop and have a positive impact.
Through the International Summer Course 2024, UNESA is committed to not only strengthening knowledge and cultural exchange between international students, but also instill enthusiasm for a more sustainable future through exploiting Indonesia's superfood potential.
