Unesa.ac.id. , SURABAYAFour Surabaya State University (UNESA) students contributed to bringing the East Java contingent to third place in the final standings of the XXI Aceh-North Sumatra National Sports Week (PON) 2024. They managed to win a silver medal in the R4 DRR (Down River Race Woman) event. rafting.
The four students are Aurellya Levina Yusadi Lestari from the D-4 Sports Coaching Study Program (Faculty of Vocational Studies), Estri Novia Febrianti from the Bachelor of Science Study Program (Faculty of Psychology), Farichah Hari Prastiwi from the Bachelor of Education Study Program. Culinary Management (Faculty of Engineering), and Vania Nasya Harna Maheswari from the Undergraduate Sports Education Study Program (FIKK).
The success of the foster children of coach Hendrik Ivan, and Adi Ruswiyono who performed nicely in the country's prestigious sporting competition was certainly not as easy as turning the palm of the hand, but it passed practice and discipline. "Of course there are challenges, such as determining the team which undergoes changes during the preparation period," said Farichah Hari Prastiwi.
The athlete who is familiarly called Icha added that thorough preparation was one of the keys to their success in winning a PON medal. Maturity comes from regular practice. During the training process, discipline and time management are key. It is also in the training arena that chemistry between team members is built.
"Chemistry is not only understanding each other, but also being able to motivate each other and unite the vision to achieve achievements. What we feel when training is that sometimes we get bored. Our strategy is to look for rivers that are more adrenaline-challenging," he explained.
There are two types of exercise that they do every week, namely water and physical training. Due to the limited training arenas in Surabaya, they chose to train in Gresik Lake and the rivers in Banyuwangi.
There was an unforgettable incident while they were training, where the river water overflowed beyond their predictions. This made their rubber boat capsize. "We were really shocked, but because we had gained the knowledge to save ourselves, we were finally able to continue training," he explained.
Himapala Members
Team toughness The women of East Java white water rafting cannot be separated from the background of the team members who also come from students from the UNESA Nature Lovers Student Association (Himapala), who are of course familiar with nature and have the ability to survive and rescue in various terrains.
Yes , two of the four members of the women's white water rafting team are members of Himapala UNESA. They are Farichah Hari Prastiwi and Estri Novia Febrianti, students. "So we at the organization often have activities and even competitions around using rubber boats both on lakes and rivers. "Also about rock climbing and so on," he said.
This is what makes them have flying hours and experience in conquering the competition in PON. This was further strengthened by the touch of the coach's cold hands. Henry Ivan, the coach who is an alumnus of Himapala UNESA, hopes that the achievements of his students can be a motivation to achieve future achievements, also for students or other Himapala members.
What we instill in athletes is discipline in training and staying focused when in the arena. Apart from that, don't get complacent. If you get silver now, in the future you should be able to get gold. "Hopefully with this achievement more and more students will be interested in pursuing the world of white water rafting," he said.
For your information, the East Java white water rafting team managed to win two silver medals at PON XXI 2024. Another silver medal was won by the men's team in the same competition number. The men's team consists of Agung Putra Pambudi, Muhammad Jaka Alfatih, Muhammad Taufik, and Muchammad Habib Fawzi Ardhia Cahyandi. Congratulations to UNESA, Jaya always for East Java. []
