Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA-The English Department of the State University of Surabaya (UNESA) held a webinar with the theme "Teacher's Challenges and Solutions of ELT In Post Pandemic Era" on a hybrid basis on Saturday, May 28, 2022. The event was attended by participants from educators throughout Indonesia as well as students of English Education.
In addition, the head of the English Education Study Program, Ahmad Munir, Ph.D., the Head of the English Literature Study Program, Dra. Pratiwi Retnaningdyah, M. Hum., M.A., Ph.D. as well as the ranks of lecturers around the department. As a resource person, there was an English lecturer at UHN I Gusti Bagus Sugriwa, Denpasar, Bali, Dr. I Gusti Ngurah Agung Wijaya Mahardika, M.Pd., or commonly called Pak Wijaya.
Mr. Wijaya shared his experience on how to have experience teaching students after the pandemic era and all the obstacles and solutions that he finally found and began to apply to increase student learning motivation. “Flipping The Class: A Quest For Better Interaction and Motivation” is the theme of the presentation. Flipped Learning is defined as class activities that are done at home, while homework is done in the classroom.
Flipped Class itself has three stages of learning approach, namely, 1) before the class (before class) students are given lesson materials to read and assimilate learning content, 2) in the classroom (in the classroom) students discuss content with their peers and teaching staff, and 3) after the class (after class) students check and confirm their understanding by doing further learning activities.
Each learning method or strategy certainly has notes. Likewise with Flipped Learning. The notes are that it requires careful preparation, takes a lot of time, requires technical knowledge from both parties, and requires internet infrastructure for both teachers and students. Then there are several things that can help increase the motivation of flipped class students, namely by providing exercises, constructive feedback, appreciation to students, and giving second chances to students.
