Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA-There are various ways that can be done to empower people with disabilities. One of them can be by providing opportunities for them to learn and develop their potential as the Surabaya State University (UNESA) lecturer team did.
The lecturer team consisting of Dr. Ratna Suhartini, M.Si, Dra. Urip Wahyuningsih, M.Pd, and Inang Yuhri Prihatina, S.Pd., M.Sn., collaborated with UKM Batik Wistara, Surabaya to train people with disabilities to make fashion patterns on 2-3 July 2022.
The participants involved are Batik Wistara employees who want to increase their knowledge and innovation in making fashion patterns. In addition, the LB High School students were escorted directly by their parents and teachers. Participants were directly trained by alumni of the UNESA Fashion Design study program who already have experience and their own boutique, namely Safira Butik in Jember.
The choice of presenters is certainly not for alumni reasons, but also because of the batik patterns which tend to be simple and easy to understand and practice by participants. “So that this training is maximal and understood by all participants. We are also assisted by assistants and sign language translators to facilitate communication between participants and event organizers or presenters during the training process, "he explained.

The participants were taught how to measure body shape, get to know about fashion pattern construction, introduce wistara batik designs, analyze designs, make and break patterns, put the results of fashion patterns on wistara batik to how to sew clothes. In addition to being given an understanding, participants also directly practice making simple clothes based on previously designed patterns.
Ratna said that the enthusiasm of the participants to take part in the training was extraordinary. Their desire to learn should be appreciated. "I salute these children. High willingness to learn. They are always enthusiastic in doing every instruction or task. They said they wanted to keep their own work and the tools they provided to take home to use at home,” he explained.
The training didn't stop there. However, the team continues to provide assistance on a regular basis. “After the training, we continue to assist until the participants can actually produce their own fashion products. In addition, there is also a follow-up in the form of ongoing training. We have plans for training in decorating and making new materials,” explained Ratna.
Ariyono Setiawan, the owner of Batik Wistara Surabaya, appreciated UNESA's efforts to continue to empower children with disabilities. He hopes the training will continue. “Hopefully we can still learn to develop quality and quantity with UNESA friends. This collaboration is important to create innovation so that it is hoped that it will encourage the progress and independence of this business in the future, "said Ariyono.
Batik Wistara is an SME that was established on May 24, 2010 and operates as a manufacturer of batik and apparel made from batik materials such as blouses, shirts, skirts, dresses, and tunics. This UKM is a batik home industry that is intended for people with disabilities. Most of the human resources here are deaf and speech impaired.
“With this training, it is hoped that children with disabilities will have competence and innovation in designing clothing patterns according to market needs. In addition, it is also expected to encourage the progress of Wistara SMEs in the future. Products are increasingly innovative and attractive to consumers' hearts, "said Ratna. [UNESA PR]
