Unesa.ac.id, Surabaya – Many things changed after the pandemic hit, including in the world of education. Since the issuance of the Minister of Education and Culture Circular No. 2 and No. 3 of 2020 concerning the prevention and handling of covid-19, learning activities are ordered to be carried out online. In these conditions, many problems arise and become a burden, both for teachers and students. Aware of this, the government implemented the New Normal habit. However, this decision inevitably had an impact on the performance of counseling teachers in schools that overcame problems that occurred to students. For this reason, it is important to equip counseling teachers with knowledge of developing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Based on this, the Unesa lecturer Community Service Team chaired by Dr. Mochamad Nursalim, M.Sc., together with two counseling expert lecturers, Dr. Retno Tri Hariastuti, M.Pd., and Dr. Eko Darminto, M.Sc., made a community service activity with the title of PPE development training to support individual counseling during new normal conditions at Public Middle Schools in Surabaya. The three of them focus on providing training for 10 counseling teachers at Public Middle School in Surabaya who are members of the Guidance and Counseling Teacher Deliberation Association of Surabaya Middle School. The selection of these targets was an agreement with the Chairman of the Guidance and Counseling Teacher Deliberation Association and the policies of the Head of the Surabaya City Education Office.
The community service activity—which was carried out for 6 months—specifically targeted several things that are increasing the understanding of middle school counselors in Surabaya regarding new normal conditions that affect counseling services in schools, increasing the ability to identify PPE needs and the ability to develop PPE needed to support the implementation of individual counseling. Thus, after this activity is carried out, it is hoped that counseling teachers will be able to provide excellent service in the field of individual counseling during the New Normal era. In addition, counseling teachers are also expected to be able to develop PPE such as face shields, masks and clear partitions that can be used during individual counseling services.
This activity received good responses from the participants. Based on the survey results, participants revealed that the information on PPE development presented was quite easy to understand. It is also considered to be quite helpful, especially to support individual counseling in the New Normal era like now. In addition, the instructor delivers the informations in a very communicative manner. The PPE developed in this training can also be used directly in the field. (ay)
