Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA-The education development cooperation between the State University of Surabaya and the Teacher Education Institute (IPG), Tawau Campus, Malaysia continues and targets various programs. Most recently, the two of them held an International Webinar with the theme "Meaningful Learning in Bilik Darjah" on Tuesday, 19 July 2022.
Dr. Mochamad Nursalim, M.Sc., Dean of the Faculty of Education (FIP) UNESA in his speech said that this activity is important to be held to share and explore experiences about meaningful learning both in Indonesia and in neighboring countries.
"It is hoped that with this discussion our learning insights will be richer which of course can affect the quality of the way we teach students and students in the classroom as well as outside the classroom," he said.
Meaningful learning, he continued, is a process of linking new information to relevant concepts contained in students' cognitive structures. Cognitive structure includes facts, concepts, and generalizations that have been learned and remembered.
“The importance of this learning concept is related to the absorption of information received by students. The task of education is not only to transfer knowledge, internalize values ââand develop skills, but also to ensure that the learning process is fun, for both students and teachers themselves," he said.
Neni Mariana, S.Pd., M.Sc., Ph.D., a lecturer at the Faculty of Education, UNESA, said that meaningful learning has been implemented in Indonesia. It is even more stable with the existence of an independent learning program and an independent campus. "In it there are assessment instruments, minimum competency assessments, numeracy literacy, Pancasila student profiles, ethno-RME, STEAM projects, and so on," he explained.

Meanwhile, Latifah bint Monnas, Head of the Department of IPG conveyed meaningful lessons that were applied in Malaysia. He explained many things related to meaningful learning, one of which was a learning model that had three interrelated important points, namely relationships, aspirations, and student learning methods.
"We explore a lot of information and knowledge to find the best learning model for students. We promote meetings with people who are experts in their fields who can support learning, we collaborate and learn many things," he said.
The event ended with a question and answer session as well as thanks and congratulations from Dr. Lina bint Thomas as the Lead Director or Deputy Director of the Tawau Campus Teacher Education Institute.
"Thank you for the opportunity to meet online, the important thing is to be able to share. Hopefully we can continue to learn to understand science and become good things that are beneficial for our education," he concluded. [UNESA PR]
