Unesa. AC ID. SURABAYA—At its 110th graduation ceremony on July 11 2024, Surabaya State University (UNESA) not only produced graduates from within the country, but also from abroad. One of the overseas students who successfully completed studies at UNESA is Chanthoeurn Dock.
He is a master's student from Phnom Penh, Cambodia who was declared a graduate during the graduation period. After the toga transfer procession, Chanthoeurn, who is a bhante or monk, shared his experiences while studying at UNESA.
Chanthoeurn said, before entering the regular program, namely the Master of Social Sciences Education, he had to take part in the BIPA (Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers) program. In this program, he began to learn Indonesian language and culture.
According to him, learning Indonesian is difficult or easy. Apart from studying in class, he often improves his Indonesian language skills by practicing directly in the dormitory or at hangout places.
"In my opinion, Indonesia is very diverse and unique. I am happy and comfortable studying here. I can gain insight and a wide network of friends. I also like the culinary delights, and like eating fried rice," he explained.
The diversity of society in Indonesia has made Chanthoeurn better understand the meaning of religious and cultural diversity. Moreover, in the BIPA program, for example, he can discuss with Indonesian students and students from other countries such as Madagascar, Thailand and China.
"From a social and cultural perspective, there are certainly differences between Indonesia and Cambodia. This allows me to learn many different things and understand the world from a broader or more comprehensive perspective," he said.
Chanthoeurn admitted that he was comfortable studying in Indonesia, therefore, after receiving a master's degree at UNESA, he also wanted to continue his education at the doctoral level at UNESA. "I want to continue to doctoral level at UNESA if I have the opportunity and can get a scholarship," he hoped. [*]
