Unesa.ac.id, Surabaya-Passion can come and go at any time, but for humanitarian affairs, it must be encouraged. That is the handle of Unesa volunteers who are always alert and swift to go to disaster sites in several areas to help victims affected by disasters. Most recently, the volunteer team “made by” the Unesa Crisis Center Mitigation Unit (SMCC) was involved in two disaster locations, Lumajang and Probolinggo on March 11-13, 2021.
The two areas were hit by flash floods at the end of February. Hundreds of houses were flooded and residents were forced to flee at several points. In Lumajang Regency alone, at least 3,000 households were affected by the flood. Likewise what happened in Probolinggo, subsequent floods continued to occur in line with the high rainfall in the area. Hundreds of residents had to be evacuated and evacuated in several safe areas.
There are many activities carried out by Unesa volunteers while there. On the first day, the volunteers performed post-disaster trauma healing in Biting Hamlet, Kutorenon Village, Lumajang Regency. The activities carried out were about learning, playing and doing healthy exercise together as well as a variety of other activities that relieve residents from disaster trauma, especially children. "With this activity, children and residents can remain cheerful and happy even though they are hit by a disaster," said Dr. Diana Rahmasari, S.Psi., M.Si., Chairman of SMCC Unesa.
On the second day, another flood occurred in Probolinggo. Unesa's volunteer team works together to help residents clean houses, roads and drainage from mud and garbage. Also, to help evacuate residents to the evacuation place and their belongings.
In addition, Unesa volunteers provide massage training to deal with limb injuries due to disasters in Sukodono, Lumajang. Then hold a simple self-defense exercise, and conduct training in responding to flood and tsunami disasters on the beach. "With disaster mitigation skills, residents can minimize the impact of disasters that occur and can anticipate issues related to disasters as early as possible," he continued.
After the flood disaster, the condition of the people in Probolinggo has gradually improved. Likewise, the residents of Lumajang have improved after the disaster. Hopefully, all the technical factors that caused the flood can be resolved and the flood will be the last. "Our commitment in Unesa, one hurts everyone feels pain, therefore Unesa through SMCC and its volunteers are always ready to collaborate in helping others, especially the victims of disasters in our beloved country," he said. "We believe that with a sense of empathy, a spirit of cooperation, mutual cooperation, and collaboration, we can rise from adversity due to both the pandemic and the disaster," said Diana. (zam)
