Unesa.ac .id, SURABAYA—Surabaya State University (UNESA) through the Bachelor of Javanese Language and Literature Education study program, Faculty of Language and Arts (FBS) opened a Javanese Language and Culture Training program for the people of Johor Malaysia. This program is in collaboration with the Indonesian Consulate General in Johor Bahru, and the Education and Culture Attaché (Atdikbud), Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.
The first Javanese language and culture training for foreign speakers was inaugurated by the Indonesian Consul General Johor Bahru who represented the Indonesian Ambassador Kuala Lumpur at the Mbah Anang Palace, on May 21 2024.
The delegation from the Ministry of Education and Culture, leaders of FBS and Coordinating Program for Javanese Language and Literature Education and the leadership of Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) were present at the inauguration.
In his inauguration speech, the Indonesian Consul General stated that this course is an effort to make Javanese culture an inclusive culture so that it can develop and be sustainable.
"This course will also be the forerunner to the formation of a center Javanese culture in Johor. "Many Javanese descendants live in Johor, especially in the Muar and Batu Pahat areas," he said.
Prof. Firdaus, Atdikbud Johor said that as the first activity, the response from the Malaysian people was very enthusiastic, so it is hoped that this activity can continue to be carried out sustainably in the future.
“This activity will be the initiation of the formation of a Javanese cultural center in Johor. This agenda is important to maintain local wisdom. "Hopefully this will become a new attraction for the local young generation and Malaysians who come from Java, as well as strengthening relations between countries," he hoped.
Bachelor of Javanese Language and Literature Education Coordinator Latif Nur Hasan, S.Pd. , M.Pd., said that after launching, training will be carried out online with 16 meetings divided into 8 units including a Javanese song unit and a Javanese script unit.
All of this will be taught as an introduction to Javanese culture. This activity will run until the end of July, and later in September there will be a launching Javanese Language and Culture course in the Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) curriculum.
This training focuses on providing provisions basic Javanese language and cultural skills. In the future, training will also be developed for children's level.
At UTHM, Javanese Language and Culture courses have been included in the curriculum with credit weight taught by lecturers from UNESA.
There are quite a lot of people interested in learning Javanese abroad, including Surinamese citizens, therefore this activity in Malaysia is expected to become a role model for activities in other countries including its development, upgrading from the basic curriculum to the advanced level including the development of modules and teaching staff.
"Because the output of the participants is that they can master the basic level, such as greetings, daily activities, congratulations at the end of the assessment and if they pass the competency they will receive a language competency certificate ," said Latif.
He hopes that the signing of the MoU that has been carried out between UNESA, Atdikbud Johor and UTHM can become a foundation for further program cooperation.
"Hopefully this program can became the forerunner of the Javanese cultural center here. So it can be useful for many parties, and in the future it can develop again not only in Malaysia, it will also be developed to other countries, including Suriname. "Thank God, yesterday the response in Malaysia was very good so we are optimistic that we can be successful in the future," he concluded.[]
