SURABAYA—The Center for Excellence in Disability Science, Disability Innovation Center, Surabaya State University (PUI DIC UNESA) held a Workshop on Higher Education for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilityin the Senate Room, 10th Floor of the Rectorate, Campus II Lidah Wetan, on Tuesday, 26 November 2024.
This workshop carries the theme "Higher Education for Individuals with Intellectual Disability" which presented speakers, Sean Tikkun, PhD, TSVI, COMS, CATIS North Carolina Central University Dept. Of Curriculum and Instruction, United States.
Sean Tikkun in front of UNESA Special Education (PLB) lecturers said that the basis for achieving inclusivity is looking for factors that cause discrimination so that it can increase accessibility.
The United States has a disability law for colleges. The policy only regulates access or inclusion of students with disabilities in higher education, but does not yet discuss the accommodation or assistance that must be provided.
In order to achieve more effective or optimal learning, efforts are needed to build participant involvement so that participants feel involved because his needs were accommodated by using various methods to deliver the material.

Professor with disabilities and Chair of DIC UNESA, Budiyanto (left) handed over a certificate of appreciation as a speaker to Sean Tikkun (right).
Sean Tikkun gives an example that can used, for example, UNESA lecturers in learning use UNESA Digital Sinau (SIDIA) which can display some material in the form of video, PPT and PDF.
There are various ways to delivering material at SIDIA can be analyzed and become important data to determine the tendency of students with disabilities to prefer certain forms or types of material.
"We cannot apply this competency-based education to students with disabilities, so there is a need for a matrix or "special assessment to measure their success when studying," he explained.
Chairman of DIC UNESA, Budiyanto explained that the motivation for carrying out this workshop was to develop education in higher education that accommodates students with intellectual disabilities.
The hope is that with this UNESA can start prepare these guidelines so that they can be shared with other universities or can be reported to the Directorate of Higher Education as data to develop education that can be useful for students with intellectual disabilities.
"With this, we hope to open up insights for our lecturers about how to provide educational services for students with intellectual disabilities," hoped the UNESA disability professor. [*]
