Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA – The State University of Surabaya (UNESA) is intensively collaborating with various institutions and universities abroad. Not a few of these collaborations have resulted in various programs and innovations that can certainly improve the quality of education in Indonesia. Like the collaboration with the University of York, UK, for example, which recently gave birth to the National Center for ELT Materials Development (NCELTMAD).
NCELTMAD is under the auspices of the Department of English Language and Literature, Faculty of Languages and Arts (FBS). The new institution was launched on Friday, July 8, 2022 at FBS UNESA, Lidah Wetan Campus, Surabaya. "NCELTMAD is a form of commitment from the two universities to provide quality education and prepare teachers or educators as well as students to face a world that continues to evolve," explained Ahmad Munir, Ph.D. as NCELTMAD team leader.
He added that there were several goals for NCELTMAD. First, to support teachers in teaching English creatively by providing worksheets that provide opportunities for students to negotiate meaning and engage in meaningful interpersonal communication in English effectively; Second, helping teachers to engage students in meaningful social interactions and communication in the classroom through high-quality materials, designed by experienced content writers and English teachers from various regions in Indonesia;
Third, offering a continuous professional development program (CPD) to teachers who have an interest in the development of teaching materials and materials so that they can enrich teaching materials in the learning process; and fourth, providing information to teachers about the latest developments in English language learning theory, research, practice, and policy and giving them the opportunity to present ideas for the professional development of English teachers.
NCELTMAD, he continued, provides teaching materials that focus on developing students' speaking skills to complement the main teaching materials and in accordance with the school curriculum. Teachers are encouraged to use these materials on a regular basis and adapt them to the context of teaching in their respective classrooms. NCELTMAD invites English teachers and lecturers in Indonesia to become members of this Center and be a part in designing and developing materials for teaching English in Indonesia.
NCELTMAD was initiated by Dr. Andrzej Cirocki, Associate Professor in English Language Education at University of York and A Visiting Professor of TESOL at UNESA. “Also several lecturers from the Department of English Language and Literature UNESA. NCELTMAD is expected to be able to build an inclusive and transformational educational environment in teaching English in Indonesia," he said.

The composition of the material development center team is; as president, namely Andrzej Cirocki, Ph.D., in the chair position there is Ahmad Munir, Ph.D., then as vice chairman there is Syafi'ul Anam, Ph.D., as secretary and treasurer respectively Sueb, M.Pd ., and Dr. Widyastuti. As the website coordinator, namely Laily Maulida Septiana Harti, M.AppLing and Irina Istode, M.A.
In his speech Andrzej Cirocki revealed that the presence of NCELTMAD was an effort to improve the quality of English teachers in Indonesia. It is hoped that through NCELTMAD, it can provide interesting and fun learning in English.
“We hope that English teachers in Indonesia can make it easier to design teaching materials with good quality and textbooks that can be used immediately. In the future, we plan to hold national and international events that focus on current issues and issues related to designing, adapting, and evaluating pedagogic materials,” he said.
Prof. Dr. Bambang Yulianto, M.Pd., UNESA's Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs gave his support as well as his pride for the inauguration of NCELTMAD. The study center is an implementation of the commitment of the two universities in providing services to the community, especially for English teachers in Indonesia.
He hopes that in the future UNESA will be able to open other study centers, especially in academic writing which can be a leap for UNESA, as well as welcome the internationalization of programs at the 'one step ahead campus'.
