Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA-Fasting is not an excuse for not doing physical activity or sports. Instead, in order to keep the body healthy and fit during the fasting month, exercise must still be done. According to Kunjung Ashadi, a lecturer at the Faculty of Sports Science (FIO) at the State University of Surabaya (UNESA), there are many benefits of exercising while fasting.
1. Fresh Body, Mood Booster
The benefits of exercise during the fasting month include improving mood and maintaining emotional stability. In addition, it maintains the body's metabolism and makes hormones work optimally.
When exercising, said Kunjung, the body secretes endorphins, hormones that trigger joy or happiness. "Hence, after exercising our bodies feel fresher, more relaxed, minds relaxed and more comfortable," he said.
2. Less Stress, Maintain Body Endurance
Exercise is very important during a pandemic that requires everyone to maintain endurance. Well, often, because the stomach is empty, the condition tends to be weak plus the workload makes a person prone to stress. The burden of the mind and psychologically is very risky for decreasing the body's resistance. Exercise can reduce the burden of the mind and psychologically.
“If you are tired from work plus hunger and thirst, most people are easily stressed. This can make the body's immune system weak and vulnerable to disease or viruses," he said.
3. Minimize Physical Decrease
In addition, exercise while fasting also reduces the risk of decreased muscle mass or physical decline that is too deep. During fasting, the physique in general suffers from shrinking. Well, to maintain muscle or physical mass, exercise or physical activity is needed.
"In the world of sports there is a term use it or lose it, meaning use your body or you will lose your body," explained the man from Malang. He gave an example, if someone doesn't jog or push ups for a long time, when suddenly they are asked to jog or push ups, then the body feels stiff and of course will get tired quickly.
This condition is understood as a decrease in physical plus physical function due to infrequent use (sports). To reduce the risk of physical decline, the way that can be done is to use it, using the body through exercise.
"Those are some ways of body care that can be done, so that hormones work optimally, muscles are maintained, the heart works optimally, the impact is that our bodies can work optimally and excellently. Healthy, of course," he said.
4. More Productive
Furthermore, a healthy and fit body plus a good mood can improve work performance and productivity both in the office, at home and elsewhere. This is reasonable, because when fasting, a hungry stomach sometimes makes you feel sleepy and want to lie down.
