Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA-For those who study Mandarin, of course, they are familiar with the Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì (KHS) or Chinese language proficiency test for foreign speakers whose functions are similar to TOEFL or IELTS for English. For some people, this test is quite challenging. However, for those who have mastered the method, of course it will be easy to conquer.
Well, the Mandarin Language Center of the State University of Surabaya (UNESA) held a seminar "How to Succeed HSK" last week (Wednesday, May 25, 2022), at the Confucius Institute, Gubeng, Surabaya. Three resource persons attended the event; 1) Ailien Clarissa, B.A, graduated from Xiamen University S-1; Chinese Language Instructor at Little Sun School Surabaya, 2) Ihya Ulumuddin, B.Ed, MTCSOL graduate of S-2 Zhejiang University (Hangzhou); Chinese Language Instructor; Director of LPBA Al-Majidiyah, and 3) Choirun Nisa', S.Pd., MTCSOL graduate of S-2 Hunan University (Changsha); Chinese Language Instructor; UNESA Chinese PUSBA.
Ailien Clarissa said that HSK consists of two kinds, namely written test and oral test. HSK is a standardized test to test the ability to speak Mandarin. HSK is usually used by students to apply for scholarships abroad, especially in China, apply for jobs, and so on. The official organizer of HSK is located at the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban).
HSK has 6 levels. Each level must master the minimum target vocabulary. For example, HSK 1 has at least 150 words, level 2 is at least 300 words, level 3 is at least 600 words, HSK 4 is at least 1,200 words, HSK 5 is at least 2,500 words, and HSK 6 is at least 5,000 words. If you feel you are capable of HSK 3, you must first try the lower test, HSK 2. "The limit for the HSK score is 120, but we must have a target more than that, maybe a target value of 200 or 180," explained Ailien.
Then there is the HSK or Mandarin proficiency test, especially in speaking. HSK starts from level 3, namely beginner level, HSK 4 intermediate level, HSK 4 and 5 advance level.
To prepare for HSK, Ailien Clarissa recommends supporting books for the HSK test, namely the HSK manual which is certified by Hanban and can also be the SuperTes application. Participants must identify the types of questions, find out their strengths and weaknesses and develop exam strategies.
“Later, one question will only be given 1 minute, so we have to prepare the strategies and during practice questions, don't forget to set a timer. So that Mandarin will always stick in our memories, we can work around this by listening to songs, watching movies, dramas, variety shows, reading novels, and even changing the features of our cellphones using Chinese, "said Ailien.

The other tips for studying for HSK preparation are: First, learn or add vocabulary. You can learn it by taking 1 vocabulary and grouping it. For example, fruit, there are apples, bananas and other fruits. Second, take 1 letter to make another word or you can make it in various other forms of words or sentences. Third, make a synonym of 1 word. This is usually often found in HSK 6. "In terms of listening (HSK 4), if you see the stars, you do 2 things, namely listening to the information and matching it with the starred sentences," said Ihya.
Choirun Nisa' said that the difficulties that students often experience when doing HSK 4 are in listening and writing. Tips for dealing with listening questions are; 1) understand the answer before the recording is played, 2) in part 1 (wrong or right) where the first and last sentences can be a clue, 3), guess the question from the answer choices, 4), keep answering as best you can, don't leave it blank.
Then for the writing aspect, usually a lot of composing sentences. This section can guess the state of the word and then determine the subject, predicate, and object as the initial structure. Nouns and pronouns generally become subjects, verbs and adjectives become objects. Add a complement or description. “Mastering special grammar in Chinese, command sentence structures, comparative sentences, and other special sentence structures; also important punctuation in HSK preparation," said Choirun Nisa'.
