Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA-Indonesia is ranked second as the country that produces the most food waste in the world. Each resident can produce 300 kg of food waste per year (Katadata, 2020). One of the wastes produced is egg shells which, when viewed from the level of egg consumption in Indonesia, reaches 1.7 million tons.
That much waste has a significant impact on the environment. For this reason, the UNESA Student Creativity Program Team (PKM-K) consisting of Irgy Redityo Dawana, Sayyidah Anni'matus Sakdiyah Al-Lathifah, Alisa Arrizkiyah, and Nila Apriliyanti was encouraged to process eggshell waste, one of them into skin care ingredients or lotions. . The product is named Locate.
Irgy Redityo Dawana said that the idea stemmed from their concern about the amount of food waste, including egg shells. Not to mention, he continued, if you look at BPS 2020 data, egg production has increased from year to year. The Directorate General of Livestock and Animal Health, Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia, noted that the potential for chicken egg production in 2020 is around 2 million tons. "It ends up being waste, where do you want to go? Final disposal sites (TPA, ed) are increasingly mounting," he said.
He and his colleagues from the UNESA Physics Education Undergraduate Study Program conducted a study and discussed a lot with both supervisors and other lecturers about the types of waste that could be used along with the content and methods of processing it. One of the things they found was that egg shells had a lot of content, but they were rarely used.
The 2019 student explained that egg shells contain minerals; calcium, strontium, fluoride, magnesium, and selenium. It also contains fibrous protein or collagen which is widely used by the beauty industry because it can treat and regenerate skin. "Collagen can whiten, disguise black spots, even scars," explained the head of the PKM.
In its production, the ingredients from egg shells are processed with other raw materials such as green tea extract and aloe vera which are also variants of Locate's products. Green tea can moisturize and reduce excess oil on the skin. While aloe vera is known as the best skin moisturizer in the beauty industry. The composition of these three ingredients is believed to be effective for skin care.
Locate is produced in three packaging sizes: there is a travel size or small size containing 100 ml, there is a homy size or medium size package containing 250 ml, and the biggy size or large size containing 500 ml. “Hopefully this product without side effects (Locate, ed) will become one of the people's choices in terms of skin care. Of course, the waste will also decrease and the potential for environmental pollution will also decrease,” he hoped. #KreasiUnesa (Unesa Public Relations)
