Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA - Even though East Java is in third place in the medal standings for the XX Papua PON 2021. However, the struggle and hard work of the athletes and officials who managed to collect as many as 287 medals need to be appreciated. Not to mention the many new records that were broken by East Java athletes.
UNESA Chancellor Prof. Dr. Nurhasan, M.Kes also commented on the medals for the East Java contingent. According to him, the acquisition of the East Java final standings at PON XX PAPUA 2021 is quite stressful. Initially, East Java was firmly in the second position and continued to be close to West Java in the first position. However, on the final and decisive match day, DKI Jakarta managed to rise to second place, while East Java dropped to third place with a very narrow medal difference.
East Java Achievements Need Evaluation and Improvement
The top three PON, East Java always compete with West Java and DKI Jakarta. He compared that at PON XIX, West Java 2016 was also very competitive, West Java as the leading host, East Java in second place, and DKI Jakarta in third position with a very fierce gold medal difference. "Our target (East Java, ed) is to become the overall champion at the XX Papua PON, yes, but we have to be stuck in third position," said the man who is also the chairman of PASI East Java.
East Java's achievements need to be a common concern for all sports stakeholders in East Java. Between targets, training and medals must be a material for mutual reflection. "Where are the shortcomings, where are the advantages, what needs to be improved and what is the most appropriate approach, all of which must be evaluated and solutions found," he said.
UNESA Coordinates with the Governor of East Java
As a university that sends many athletes to the East Java contingent, he said, UNESA has coordinated with the Governor of East Java, Dra. Hj. Khofifah Indar Parawansa, M.Sc., a few days ago to improve the training system and latda for all sports (sports) including Olympic sports. The direction later, in addition to improving the sports achievements of East Java in national sports events, is also increasing Indonesia's sports achievements in international events.

In this XX PON, many East Java athletes broke PON records and national records. As reported by the official website of PON XX Papua 2021, the East Java contingent managed to break records in 18 match numbers in Diving, Shooting, Athletics, and most of them were in Swimming.
