Unesa. ac.id, SURABAYA—Balanced nutritional intake determines the quality of a person's health. For this reason, education about nutrition needs to be intensified, as is done by the Faculty of Sports and Health Sciences (FIKK), Surabaya State University (UNESA).
FIKK held nutrition education in the context of the 41st National Sports Day (Haornas) 2024 at the FIKK Auditorium, Campus 2 Lidah Wetan, on Saturday, September 21 2024. This activity had the theme "Optimal Diet to Optimize Physical and Mental Health."

Chairman of the 41st Haornas FIKK series, Indra Himawan Susanto said that this activity was very important, considering the high number of diabetes sufferers in the last few years >
If in the past it was mostly only the elderly who got diabetes, now many children and teenagers also suffer from diabetes, even athletes can also get diabetes, because athletes are also included in the vulnerable category.
He added that diabetes, which is starting to attack all groups indiscriminately, both young and old, both athletes and non-athletes, is caused by suboptimal diet and lifestyle.
"From this activity, FIKK students are expected to be more concerned about optimal diet and lifestyle. Apart from that, students are expected to be able to create healthy and nutritious food for all groups from children to the elderly," he said.
Raising Diabetes and Prevention
The material session emphasized the number of people with diabetes in Indonesia, one of which is due to lifestyle factors and dietary habit.
Presentation about Symptoms and treatment of diabetes by Bella Saphira revealed that diabetes triggers various serious diseases such as blindness, heart disease, stroke and kidney failure.
Diabetes is a condition where blood sugar levels are too high. This can be caused by two factors; lack of insulin production or the insulin produced does not work properly, which is known as insulin resistance.
Based on 2015 WHO data, he explained, 1 in 10 people suffer from diabetes, and it is estimated that by 2040 the number will increase to 2 of 10 people.
Meanwhile, according to 2021 International Diabetes Federation data, Indonesia is ranked 5th with the highest number of diabetes sufferers, and is predicted to remain in that ranking until 2045.
In Indonesia, he explained, around 20 million people suffer from diabetes. However, 86% of them do not realize that they have this disease. Of those diagnosed, 70% are uncontrolled. In addition, 25% of diabetes cases attack people under 45 years of age.
The main risk factors for diabetes include age, obesity, an inactive lifestyle and family history. Women who have had diabetes during pregnancy or given birth to a baby weighing more than 4 kg are also at risk of developing diabetes.
The classic symptoms of diabetes, explained Bella Saphira, include frequent urination, frequent thirst and frequent hunger, but weight actually decreases for no apparent reason. Diabetes prevention includes regular check-ups, maintaining a diet, and exercising at least 150 minutes per week, with regular aerobic and weight training.
"Control blood sugar with a healthy diet and regular physical activity to prevent diabetes," he stressed.
The Importance of Diet
Priscillia Zefanya explained in more depth about nutritious food as the key to maintaining a healthy body, especially for those who are physically active.
He said that consuming balanced foods such as vegetables, fruit, whole grains and protein is very important to support body function and increase energy A healthy diet also needs to be accompanied by adequate fluid intake, especially water. Consumption of foods such as carbohydrates, protein, vegetables and fruit must be prioritized, while sugar, salt and fat are consumed in limited quantities.
It is important to remember, added Zefanya, that half of the dinner plate should be filled with vegetables and fruit, while the other half should contain protein and carbohydrates. There is no need to choose expensive ingredients, local vegetables and fruit can also be a good choice to meet nutritional needs.
"A healthy and balanced diet is the basis of body health and fitness," he said.
In addition to explaining the risks of diabetes and optimal eating patterns, in this activity students also had the opportunity to check blood sugar levels. Those present were also invited to witness firsthand the process of making a balanced nutritional menu demonstrated by Chef Linda Wati Turnip. The processed food made is chicken wrapped salad, and the drink is creamy dragon fruit juice. (*)
