SURABAYA—In the context of the 12th Anniversary, the Confucius Institute (CI) of Surabaya State University (UNESA) in collaboration with the Mandarin Language Education Study Program, Faculty of Languages and Arts (FBS) held a hybrid International Mandarin Seminar at Building T2, FBS, Lidah Wetan Campus , Surabaya on Saturday, October 28 2023.
This activity, which was combined with Mandarin Festival VIII 2023, was attended by the PRC Consulate General (Konjen) in Surabaya, the Education and Culture Attaché (Atdikbud) of the Indonesian Embassy in Beijing, the Central China Normal University (CCNU) China, and university and faculty leaders. Apart from that, it was also attended by partners and the UNESA academic community.
In his speech, the Director of CI UNESA, Sueb, S.Pd., M.Pd., explained that the Confucius Institute (CI) UNESA is one of the the oldest in Indonesia and one of nine CIs in Indonesia in partnership with one of China's best campuses, Central China Normal University (CCNU).
“We are very proud to be part of this diplomacy. "Hopefully we can carry out our mandate as well as possible," he said.
CI UNESA, continued Sueb, is one of the largest CIs and teaching points in Indonesia. This year alone, the Mandarin study program at the CI UNESA teaching point accepted more than 200 students. This figure is even higher if you add the students from their partners in schools and educational institutions.
The large number of students and students shows the public's trust in CI UNESA. He really hopes that CI UNESA will not only become a center for learning Mandarin language and culture, but will also be able to have a wider impact as part of self-diplomacy between the Indonesian-Chinese governments in the fields of education, culture and economics.

After 12 years of its existence, it continues to promote cultural exchange between China and Indonesia. CI UNESA made a huge contribution. He emphasized that the Confucius Institute is not only for China, but also for Indonesia, and for the whole world.
"I hope that CI will develop further in promoting and implementing the concept of two countries as well as jointly building a Chinese-Indonesian community with "goals for a common future. Yudil Chatim, Atdikbud At the Indonesian Embassy in Beijing, said, Indonesia-China cooperation opens up educational opportunities that not only open up career opportunities, but also enrich cultural and linguistic experiences.
"The more Indonesian sons and daughters who understand Chinese language and culture, the greater the opportunity to "is involved in international cooperation and contributes to the development of both countries," he said.
He added that there is the latest cooperation between Indonesia and China in the field of vocational education involving UNESA. There is a 1+1+1 program for diploma 3 students which allows students to spend 1 year studying in Indonesia, 1 year studying in China, and 1 year doing an internship in industry.
In addition, for undergraduate students, there is 2+2 program, namely 2 years of study in Indonesia and 2 years in China. These two programs will earn 2 diplomas and allow students to take Chinese language courses while studying in Indonesia.

On that occasion, CI UNESA also signed an MoU on cooperation with a number of partners, starting from the Cheng Ho Education Foundation, Poltekkes Kemenkes Surabaya, Stikes Hang Tuah Surabaya , the NU Khadijah Surabaya Education and Social Park Foundation, and the Metta Surabaya Education Foundation.
Apart from that, CI UNESA also gave awards to a number of cooperation partners. The awards were handed over by the Vice Chancellor for Academic, Student and Alumni Affairs, Prof. Dr. Madlazim, M.Sc., and Dean of FBS Syafi'ul Anam, Ph.D., this is a form of appreciation for the cooperation and collaboration that has been carried out so far.
As for partners who synergize with CI UNESA includes; Untag, Little Sun School, Yong Chun Chinese Language Center, p>This year's International Mandarin Seminar was attended by resource persons; Prof. Chen Wen Qiang from Tsinghua University, Zhang Fang, Prof. Dr. Subandi M.A from UNESA, and Cicik Arista M.TCSOL from UNESA. They discussed material around the theme "Unlocking The Digital Era: Navigating Mandarin Learning's Opportunities and Challenges".
In addition, CI UNESA Director Sueb emphasized that CI UNESA was founded and does not belong to UNESA. However, it belongs to the Chinese Government Foundation which has offices at UNESA and supports several teaching points at campuses, schools and local LBB partners. []
