Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA—Svara Pertiwi Group, UKM Unesa Symphony Orchestra (USO), State University Surabaya (Unesa) made the alma mater proud on the international stage. The team from the Undergraduate Music Study Program won a gold medal in the Folks Instrumental Ensemble category at the 2025 Asia Students Art Festival (ASAF) in Hong Kong on January 17-19 2025.
ASAF is a major Asian festival held annually by First Education Group Hong Kong. This event was attended by various countries such as Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and Australia.
ASAF has two main competition categories, namely music and dance, which gives participants the opportunity to perform music and western and eastern instruments such as from Indonesia, Turkey, China, etc.
USO coach, Harpang YudhaEmployeeto said that the Svara Pertiwi group had been preparing for 3 months before performing in Hong Kong. Previously, the Unesa music team passed the preliminary round in October 2024 which was held online.
The winner of this round got the opportunity to appear on the international stage at the final in Hong Kong. "We left with hope on January 16 and came home with the champion title and medal on January 20," he said.
In the preliminary round (preliminary), the Svara Pertiwi Team won 2-Runner -Up and in the final round in Hong Kong, he won 1st place.
Harpang said that the challenge came when preparations for the final round were carried out. Starting from the training schedule during preparation which conflicts with preparation for the student's final semester exam or UAS.
Apart from that, during the competition the weather conditions were cold in Hong Kong so each individual had to adapt to both the instruments and the body. The way to overcome this is by practicing regularly, and adapting to the climate conditions in Hong Kong.
Concert Preparation in London
For Harpang , this achievement is a manifestation of the seriousness of UKM and the Unesa Music Arts Study Program in expanding to the international level. After this, the Svara Pertiwi Group prepared for a follow-up concert in London.
“This is because the music team that received the highest award in the International Final Round will join the ASAF 10th Anniversary Winner Showcase in London, at the Royal College of Music on July 31 2025 with a concert performance, music master class," he explained.
Apart from excelling in ASAF in Hong Kong, UKM USO also occupied the 2nd Runner-up position at the Preliminary Region Thailand (Osaka International Music Competition) in 2024.
Harpang hopes that the Bachelor of Music Study Program will receive full support from the university to achieve even more brilliant achievements. He also hopes that this achievement can be an inspiration for other students to compete for achievements and make Unesa proud on the world stage.
