SURABAYA—Coinciding with the celebration of the 13th anniversary of the Confucius Institute (CI) Surabaya State University (UNESA), a symbolic book donation event was held by the Chinese Consul General in Surabaya to the Dean of the UNESA Faculty of Languages and Arts (FBS), on Saturday, November 2 2024 .
This event is part of the Chinese Consul General's long-term program called "Cheng Hoo Library" which aims to strengthen friendly relations between China and Indonesia and support the development of education in Indonesia through books and media.
The handover activity took place at the FBS UNESA dean's office on Campus 2 Lidah Wetan. Chinese Consul General Xu said that this donation aims to increase the collection of books and teaching materials that can be used by UNESA FBS students, especially those in the Mandarin Study Program who are also Confucius Institute students.
The books donated include various materials about China , paintings, and other reading materials both in English and Indonesian.
"Hopefully students at CI can read and utilize these books. This is our contribution to enriching educational resources at UNESA," said the Consul General Xu.
Dean of FBS UNESA, Syafi'ul Anam in his discussion with the Chinese Consul General, welcomed this initiative and emphasized the importance of continued collaboration .
"The Cheng Hoo Library program is very much in line with our mission to add these books to the faculty library while continuing to improve the quality of education and providing broad access to literature for students," he said.
UNESA has become a strategic partner of the Chinese government through the management of CI UNESA, which currently serves more than 400 active students in the UNESA Mandarin Study Program and hundreds of students at CI teaching points in Surabaya.
With this support, also gave rise to the idea of opening a Mandarin Reading Corner "UNESA Cheng Hoo Library" in the Mandarin Study Program reading room located in the T8 FBS UNESA lecture building complex. It is hoped that full support from the Chinese Consul General and CI UNESA can make this idea a reality.
With the presence of the Cheng Hoo Library and the development of more modern literature facilities, it is hoped that Mandarin language and culture education at UNESA will be more advanced and beneficial for students and the educational community at large.
