Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA- -Diabetes or diabetes is a disease with the third most cases in Indonesia after stroke and heart disease. Diabetes now not only attacks older people, but also affects anyone, including young people such as students.
Diabetes is caused by an unhealthy lifestyle such as consuming excess sugar. According to a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine (FK) Surabaya State University (UNESA), dr. Rahmantio Adi, Sp.PD, apparently this chronic disease can also be caused by the habit of vaping (electric cigarettes).
According to him, vape contains various substances that can affect the body's metabolism, such as nicotine, carcinogenic and many other dangerous substances. Even though they do not contain TAR or tobacco residue such as carbon monoxide, vapes contain other chemicals from evaporation.
"The dangerous content of vaping will cause blood fats to become toxic, thereby disrupting the regulation of the work of insulin in regulating blood sugar," he explained.
Just like cigarettes in general, vaping has the risk of causing a spike in blood sugar levels. He analogized vape and regular cigarettes to lamps and candles which are both used for lighting, only used differently.
Apart from that, the dangerous content of vape fluid can also cause insulin resistance. When the body becomes less responsive to insulin, the hormone responsible for regulating blood sugar levels, which can cause a significant increase in blood sugar levels.
Insulin resistance is one of the key factors in the development of type 2 diabetes, which is now often found in teenagers. Furthermore, other chemicals in vape vapor can cause inflammation and oxidative stress in the body.
Both of these conditions can damage the glucose metabolism system, making it difficult for the body to control blood sugar levels. "This effect can worsen the risk of diabetes, especially for students who already have unhealthy eating patterns and lifestyles," he explained.
The internal medicine specialist also emphasized the importance of students recognizing the early signs of diabetes. Symptoms of diabetes often appear slowly and are not realized, so many people only find out about their condition when it has become more serious.
Several signs to watch out for include frequently feeling excessively thirsty (polydipsia), frequent urination (polyuria), unreasonable fatigue, and weight loss for no apparent reason. Apart from that, wounds that are difficult to heal and blurred vision can also be a signal that the body is experiencing a sugar metabolism disorder.
"If these symptoms of diabetes are ignored and the condition is not treated immediately, the impact can be serious and there is a risk of triggering long-term complications long," explained doctor Tio.
To prevent the risk of diabetes, the lecturer who was born in the City of Heroes advised students to avoid this habit as early as possible. Students who already use e-cigarettes should start reducing their frequency, or better yet, stop altogether to prevent metabolic damage that can lead to diabetes.
Apart from that, maintaining a healthy lifestyle by eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and monitoring blood sugar levels regularly is also important to prevent the risk of diabetes. Prevention is better than cure.[]
