Unesa. ac.id., SURABAYA—Surabaya State University (UNESA) through the Faculty of Languages and Arts (FBS) again held the fifth International Conference on Cultural Studies and Applied Linguistics (ICCSAL) online on Friday, August 9 2024.
ICCSAL, previously named Social Sciences, Humanities and Education Conference (SoSHEC), this time carries the theme "Inclusivity and Diversity in Culture, Arts, Humanity, Language, and Literature ” or “Inclusivity and Diversity in Culture, Arts, Humanities, Languages and Literature.”
UNESA this year is collaborating with Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) Malaysia (Co-Host) presenting a number of speakers from various countries, including, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Fazli Taib Saearani, from UPSI Malaysia; Bimali Indrarathne from General Sir John Kotelawala Defense University, Sri Lanka.
Apart from that, there is also Prof. Peter Charles Taylor, Ph.D., from Murdoch University, Australia, and Ahmad Munir, Ph.D., from UNESA. ICCSAL, which was attended by hundreds of participants from various countries, is part of the series of the XI 2024 Indonesian National Education Convention (Konaspi) which will culminate on 8-10 October 2024.
In his speech, UNESA Chancellor Prof. Dr. Nurhasan, M.Kes., said that inclusivity and diversity are important foundations in community life. These two things are also the main basis for cultural and linguistic studies. The Chancellor, who is familiarly called Cak Hasan, emphasized that this conference exists as a forum for academics, researchers and practitioners from various parts of the world to share knowledge and experiences, as well as deepen understanding of cultural and linguistic diversity.

We invite all participants to actively participate and contribute to creating a more inclusive global society, where every individual feels valued and equal," he said. p>In the material session, Prof. Peter Charles Taylor presented "Transformative STEAM Education: Title Towards a Moral Commitment for Sustainable Futures." He explored the importance of STEAM or Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education.
This interdisciplinary approach is intended to encourage the creation of a young generation who has moral awareness and a commitment to sustainability. By adopting arts-based learning methods, STEAM education can equip students with transformative abilities, including moral values, to actively contribute to sustainable development.
The next session, Muhammad Fazli Taib Bin Saearani, explained about “Dance Education as a Tool for Inclusivity and Cultural Title Preservation." According to him, dance education is an effective means of achieving inclusivity and cultural preservation.
"Through a holistic approach that includes various artistic disciplines, dance education can build personal connections, skills problem solving, as well as a deeper understanding of art," he explained.
Next, by bringing up the topic of Learning Difficulties and Inclusive Teaching, Bimali Indrarathne explained the importance of understanding and overcoming specific learning difficulties (SpLD) through inclusive education that aimed at students with SpLD such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia.
Apart from that, also at ADHD children who experience difficulties in language processing, mathematics, attention, motor control and writing. Therefore, he proposed that teacher education programs, both pre-service and in-service, need to include SpLD-related content, including practical tips for identification and inclusive teaching.
Prof. Mansoor Mohd. Noor presented material on "Understanding and the Dynamism of the Nation in the Title Post-Colonial Countries of ASEAN: The Implications on the Study of Nation, Culture and Literature". He highlighted the importance of understanding colonialism, colonialism, and the concept of nation in ASEAN postcolonial states to decolonize life and strengthen relations between indigenous peoples and the Asian diaspora.

He initiated that in the context of this dynamic, literary works have an important role as reflections and agents of social change. "I hope that ICCSAL 2024 can embody the spirit of inclusivity and diversity in academic activities and interactions with each other, creating meaningful and enlightening experiences for everyone so they can work together to improve applied cultural and linguistic studies, and create a more inclusive and global community. diverse," he said.
UNESA lecturer, Ahmad Munir, on that occasion delivered the material "Promoting Inclusion and Diversity Through Materials Title Development in the English Teacher Education Program at UNESA." He discussed the development of learning materials as an effort to promote inclusivity and diversity in the English teacher education program at UNESA Presents examples of material development projects in the English teacher education program at UNESA.
For information, ICCSAL is an annual conference developed with the aim of building a platform where students academics and practitioners can share findings, engage in meaningful discussions, and encourage partnerships.
There were 163 paper submissions from academics around the world in the 5th ICCSAL 2024 which were selected in a rigorous and comprehensive screening process. Feature selected papers that will not only contribute to the academic discourse during the conference, but will also be considered for publication in ICCSAL proceedings.[]
