FK UNESA leaders and lecturers with new students in PKKMB
Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA—Faculty of Medicine (FK) Surabaya State University (UNESA) inaugurates around 147 new students in the Introduction to New Student Campus Life (PKKMB) 2024. A number of freshmen underwent a series of PKKMB packaged in various forms of activities.
Deputy Dean for Learning, Research and Community Service, Student Affairs and Alumni, FK, dr. Febrita Ardianingsih emphasized that becoming a medical student is not only about achieving academic achievements, but also about developing oneself holistically.
"Apart from that, PKKMB not only introduces new students to the campus environment, but also provides understanding and skills necessary to manage the stress and pressure they may face," he said.
With the provisions provided during PKKMB, he hopes that FK students can be better prepared mentally and emotionally in undertaking intensive medical education, so that they can maintaining a balance between academic demands and mental health.

FK lecturer, Dr. Sisi Artayasuinda, said that FK students often face various stressors which include very high academic demands, in where the amount of information that must be studied creates great pressure. Apart from that, discipline in time management, adaptation to new social environments.
"Heavy workload also adds to the pressure. In fact, the level or years of education can be a determining factor in how much stress a student feels,” he explained.
A meta-analysis showed that 33% of medical students experience depression, making them more vulnerable than the general population. Doctor Sisi emphasized that the risk of depression is especially higher in female students.
FK lecturers' talk show or sharing sessions with new students about how to manage stress, anxiety and how to study.
Symptoms of depression Common experiences include prolonged feelings of sadness, decreased enthusiasm, and feeling tired easily. If left without proper treatment, these feelings can disrupt students' academic and social lives.
Apart from depression, he also highlighted the difference between depression and anxiety. Anxiety is often accompanied by physical symptoms such as headaches, excessive sweating, palpitations, stomach discomfort, or motor restlessness.
To prevent and overcome stress, he provides several important recommendations. Students are encouraged to maintain their health by exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, consuming balanced nutritious food, and adopting clean and healthy living habits.
"It is also important to do activities that suit their interests and abilities, think positively, and don't hesitate to discuss their complaints with someone they can trust," he added.

Another lecturer, dr. Ariesia Dewi Ciptorini, also provides valuable guidance on how to increase and maintain learning motivation. According to him, an optimal learning environment is the main key in maintaining motivation. Support from those closest to you such as family and friends is very important, because they can help create a comfortable environment with minimal distractions.
"The use of tools and facilities must also be appropriate, as well as a consistent study routine, is also a "an important factor in creating a productive learning atmosphere," he added.
To overcome feelings of laziness and boredom which often hinder motivation to learn, Ariesia suggests identifying the cause first. Once the cause is found, students can divide tasks into smaller and manageable parts.
According to him, social support also plays an important role in maintaining motivation to learn. Ariesia emphasized the importance of joining a study group, consulting with a mentor or academic supervisor, and maintaining good communication with family and friends.
"Having a positive mindset is the key to continuing to progress. "Focusing on self-development rather than perfection, staying positive, and always remembering initial motivation are effective ways to maintain enthusiasm for learning," he explained.[]
