Unesa. ac.id., SURABAYA—Deficiency of fluids during fasting can cause dehydration which has the potential to trigger health problems such as fatigue, headaches and irregular heartbeats. Therefore, fluid needs must be truly fulfilled.
In meeting fluid needs during the fasting month, the habit of most people is that they tend to consume processed or instant drinks such as isotonic drinks.
Related to this , lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine (FK) Surabaya State University (UNESA), dr. Rahmantio Adi, Sp.PD., emphasized that body fluid needs should be obtained from mineral water or plain water that is drunk daily, not from other drinks.
Drinks with isotonic drink composition contain sugar so they are not recommended to be consumed excessively.
"High sugar content has effects such as frequent urination or increased thirst. In the long term it also results in easy weakness and weight gain," he said.
In context The importance of managing fluid intake during fasting, Lini Anisfatus Sholihah, S.Gz., M.Sc, lecturer in nutrition at UNESA added, daily sugar consumption should not exceed 25 grams or around 5 tablespoons of granulated sugar for adults.
< p>Reduce Cold Drinks and SugarHe advised against consuming drinks that are too cold, because they can cause discomfort. Especially when fasting in cold or rainy months recently, it will trigger someone to catch a cold.
"Consuming iced drinks is actually not a problem if it is in reasonable portions, but you also need to pay attention to cleanliness so that it doesn't cause problems for your health. throat," he explained.
He added that fluid requirements per day are around 2 liters or the equivalent of 8 glasses of mineral water. To distribute fluid intake optimally, this Surabaya-born lecturer provides tips on how to meet fluid needs when fasting.
One way that can be done is with the 2-4-2 formula, namely 2 glasses when breaking the fast, 4 glasses at night, and 2 glasses at dawn.
"The distribution of four glasses at night is not to be drunk straight away, it can be divided again after tarawih and before bed," he explained.
This division of the schedule aims to ensure that the stomach remains safe for main meals and is not too full with drinks, which are also important as a source of energy. Total fluid intake in a day should reach 8 glasses to ensure adequate hydration during fasting.[*]
