Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA-In order to equip prospective reporter students, the Documentation and Information Services Division, UNESA Public Relations Unit held a Basic Level Journalism Training in the 2nd Floor Meeting Room of the UNESA Rectorate Building Lidah Wetan on Wednesday, (11/17/2021). More than 30 participants who participated in the activity, they were active students who came from various study programs and majors.
Head of Publication and Institutional Image Division, Prima Vidya Asteria, S.Pd., M.Pd., stated that the purpose of the training is to equip prospective reporters with an understanding of journalistic basics, so they are no longer confused when they go to the field for coverage. In addition, it is also to develop the potential of students in the fields of writing and journalism. "We accommodate those who are interested in the world of journalism to develop themselves and deepen their knowledge of news writing with PR friends," he said.
Meanwhile, Gilang Gusti Aji, S.I.P., M.Sc., UNESA Lecturer and Head of the Documentation and Information Services Division stated that the task of public relations is not only to be a liaison between institutions and the general public, but also plays an important role in maintaining and improving the image of the institution. “This reputation and image is important and is the key to public trust. In fact, PR must be able to design UNESA special features that are easy to remember and known to the public," he explained.
One of the team's strategies in improving the image is utilizing social media. Institutional official social media accounts such as Youtube, Instagram, Tiktok, Twitter and others are colored with interesting content around agendas, policies to innovations and achievements of the academic community. "The content can't be arbitrary, we even do research first so that the content can be accepted and there are many visitors," he explained.
On that occasion, the participants received the provision of methods and strategies for writing news and public relations releases. Institutional news writing style is different from media company news. Apart from having different goals, they also have different paradigms. In carrying out reporting duties, reporters must first design or plan their coverage, what data to look for and to whom the data can be obtained. Then do the reportage according to plan. After the data is collected and qualified, the reporter must immediately write it down and send it to the editorial department for immediate processing and publication.
The job of a PR reporter is to cover more activities or events such as talk shows, training, seminars, webinars, competitions and MoUs on cooperation. In addition, it is also about achievements, innovations, campus policies and expert opinions on current issues. In order to facilitate the reporting process, journalists must understand the important elements of the activity, starting from the name of the agenda, background, objectives, participants and the things discussed in it. "Plan the coverage, make a chart of questions or what data to look for that can make it easier in the field," said Hisyam, one of the presenters.
In writing news, reporters can use steps or several strategies, namely writing by following the flow of the previously created question chart. For example, starting from the event organizer, the name of the event, the purpose of the event, when and where and involving anyone with what expectations. These elements can be a structure in creating news leads. Likewise writing about innovation, policy and achievement. It can start with the actor or maker, what and made of what with what purpose and a series of other important elements.
In the next session, participants were provided with public relations photography techniques from A. Rohman, Senior Journalist and Editor of the Community Ambassador. In photographing activities or taking pictures can not be arbitrary. The resulting photo must represent the purpose of the coverage. Photos must be able to tell a story to the reader or anyone who sees it. Vivid photos are born from taking the right angle, composition and momentum. "If you don't have a camera, it's okay to use a cellphone, the important thing is to understand the strategy," he said.
Then, for those who already have a camera, it is necessary to study and explore good and correct shooting techniques. At least, learn about the triangle of the lighting system in photography, which is ISO or sensor sensitivity, shutter-speed and aperture. "Deepening this triangular system is important, it can be done independently at home," he said.
Then in the final session, participants also received material on how to write features and reviews from Basyir Aidi, UNESA Magazine Coordinator. In general, writing features and reviews is almost the same as writing news, but the elements and framework are different. Features are usually packaged in the form of a relaxed and flowing sentence description. Often raises the other side of the event or the human interest side of an incident. The same narrative style can be applied to writing about innovation and achievement.
From the material presented, the participants also immediately practiced digging up data, interviewing resource persons and how to write them which was directly guided by Basyir Aidi and his team. Prima hopes that, through the training, students will not only be able to carry out reporting tasks at UNESA, but also, the understanding and skills can be used for student careers in the future. "Our desire is that they can add experience in the field of journalism, later when they enter as professional journalists, they are mentally ready and have competence," he concluded. (UNESA PR).
