A Dramaloka performance that attracts the attention of visitors; both in terms of story, delivery techniques and event packaging.
Unesa.ac.id. SURABAYA—Presenting the image of marginalized urbanites in Surabaya, students of the 2023 Indonesian Literature Undergraduate Study Program, Faculty of Languages and Arts (FBS) UNESA held a Dramaloka performance entitled "Asmara Pinggiran" at the UNESA Sawunggaling Performance Building, Lidah Wetan Campus, on December 12 2024
This activity was initiated by the lecturer in charge of the Drama Studies course as part of the final semester exam practicum or UAS. Dramaloka is the first stage of the initial milestone in the tradition of annual Indonesian Literature drama performances at UNESA, which will be continuously regenerated by subsequent generations.
The philosophy of Dramaloka was originally coined as a drama venue which contains the central philosophy of drama appreciation itself, until finally the name was approved as Dramaloka.
This performance features a script by Indonesian Literature students class of 2023 who adapted the drama script "Madun Orchestra I: Madekur and Tarkeni" by Arifin C. Noer.
Centers on two main characters, namely Mardhi the pickpocket and Tarmina the prostitute; Asmara Pinggiran tells a love story that is not only about promises, but also the complexity of fighting with dignity, despair, stigmatization of other people's views, and the harsh depravity of life in the suburbs of Surabaya.
The story of this performance presents the irony that all work, whether halal or not in the eyes of religion, is done to make a living, including prostitution and pickpocketing as a form of crime and a social reality in the city of Surabaya.

Dramaloka inserts a moral message in the offense the cycle of investment and exploitation of children by parental arrogance. Debrina Putri, an Indonesian Literature student class of 2022 who also watched, expressed her admiration for this performance.
“The Dramaloka show was extraordinary, the concept was unique, with a mixture of romance, comedy and religious genres. "The drama follows trends, so I am very amazed and proud of my Indonesian Literature students class of 2023 who have conceptualized this Dramaloka very creatively," he said.
However, despite its success, this does not mean that in the process no conflicts were created; both between individuals and between divisions.
Luluk Listiyani as director said that lowering each other's egos is the key to uniting the vision. “Technically everything is safe, the basics of acting can be learned and chemistry can be built; "But ego matters cannot be negotiated," he said.
"Different backgrounds that clash with each other are the biggest challenge in building collaboration. Both theater students, film students and organization students have their own problem solving. "But thanks to this collective process, we learned that not all methods of conflict resolution can be hit equally," he added.

Opening of the Dramaloka 'Asmara Pinggiran' which was attended by leaders, lecturers and students from around FBS .
Furthermore, Erwan Saing, the person in charge, hopes that this dramaloka production can take place every year. "Starting with the class of 2023, I hope that in the future Dramaloka can become an annual tradition that is looked forward to by the entire academic community on this campus. Dramaloka is a portrait that is not about production, performance and artistry, but rather a story worth telling," he said.
He believes that theatrical performances can be a forum for Indonesian Literature students to explore their creativity and talents in the field of arts, not just in the field of language. Not merely fulfilling obligations in the final semester exam, Dramaloka is a manifestation of collaboration between Indonesian Literature students in the process of working together.
In line with his hopes, Deputy Dean II of FBS, Henny Subandiyah, revealed that this Dramaloka activity was the beginning of the journey for the class of 2023 Indonesian Literature students in honing their creativity and artistic abilities.
“I really appreciate the hard work and dedication of Indonesian Literature students class of 2023 in presenting this Dramaloka performance. "This performance is not just entertainment, but also a work of art that is full of meaning and moral messages," he said.
He hopes that through Dramaloka, playwrights will be born who are UNESA Indonesian Literature graduates in the entertainment arena and entertainment world.[*]
