Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA-A total of 2,025 participants took the Computer-Based Writing Examination (UTBK) at the State University of Surabaya (UNESA) on Thursday, 19 May 2022. In detail, there were 1,000 participants in session 5 (morning) and 1,025 participants in session 6 (afternoon). A total of 11 of them are participants with disabilities.
“A total of 15 participants with disabilities took part in the UTBK at UNESA. There are 6 who are visually impaired and 9 who are quadriplegic. Well, 11 of them took the test in today's 5th session. There are 6 people with visual impairments and 5 participants who are physically disabled,” explained the Head of the UNESA Admissions Unit, Dr. Sukarmin, M.Pd.
He added, participants with disabilities took part in special sessions, namely the 5th session (today) and the 10th session. The location is also special, namely the Training Center, 4th Floor, Rectorate Building, Lidah Wetan Campus. Based on the provisions, participants with disabilities are indeed given special treatment according to the type of disability.
1. There is a companion
For people with disabilities, dozens of volunteers or special assistants were prepared to directly greet the participants in front of the test building. The assistant is tasked with directing and even guiding the participants to the front of the room where the participants take the exam.
“Participants arrived at the location with prokes and were immediately greeted in front of the building. We first introduced ourselves to the participants and then asked or asked permission. We helped carry his bag and guided him to the front of the test room. We also have to ask the participants in what way they are more comfortable being led,” said Anggi, one of the facilitators.
2. Special Device
Sukarmin added that special devices were also prepared for participants with disabilities to help participants run the test, including a reglet and stylus, paper, headset and non-visual desktop access (NVDA) software or a screen reader program that made it easier for blind participants to 'read' exam questions by voice. . Reglet and stylus are writing instruments commonly used by blind people.
“Participants with disabilities need a special approach and treatment. That's why the committee and assistants are from PSLD UNESA or from Extraordinary Education (PLB) who do have special abilities in this field. Even then, they had previously been given a special briefing,” explained the FMIPA lecturer.
Sukarmin explained, participants took the test safely and smoothly without any significant obstacles. Participants have implemented the process and brought the requirements according to the exam conditions. During the mentoring, the participants were in accordance with the process.

3. Participants' Expectations
Sukma Anugrah, a quadriplegic participant from Nganjuk said that to take part in the UTBK he needed a fairly challenging struggle. Although the distance from Nganjuk to Surabaya is quite far. However, for the sake of his future goals and for the sake of attending college, he went through it with enthusiasm and full of hope.
Long before the exam, Sukma had prepared himself to the maximum, namely by training himself to answer questions. "There are three that I prepared. 1) mental preparation by asking for the support of the closest people, praying and calming down. 2) preparation for learning to understand and answer questions. 3) transportation preparation. Thank God it wasn't too late and the exam went smoothly. Hopefully the results can be maximized and can be accepted in the UNESA Cosmetology department," said Sukma.
A blind participant from Surabaya, Renne explained that taking the exam does require support from the closest people, parents, family and close friends. That way, hopes and 'dreams' can be maintained, motivation can continue to burn. “Motivation from within sometimes also needs to be strengthened with encouragement from outside. So there is a passion for maximum learning," he said.
Renne continued, the test went well and admitted that she had prepared herself as well as possible beforehand. He hopes that his UTBK results are as expected and can lead him to one of his dream study programs, UNESA's Culinary and Music Arts. [UNESA PR]
